I'm not sure what you mean by "I just have audio connections," but if all you want to do is insert the Cakewalk TTS-1 plugin into your project containing MIDI, just do this:

Inserting Cakewalk TTS-1 Into Project: At the top of the screen, go to Insert>Soft Synths>Cakewalk TTS-1. Now, double click on the tab for the MIDI track in which you'd like to apply the TTS-1 soft-synth (this is in the left pane of the track view where each track is named…e.g. “track 1”, or “drums”, or “bass,” etc.). A dialog box appears. Select Cakewalk TTS-1 for the output of your MIDI track, so that the MIDI track that you want to hear through TTS-1 is heard through TTS-1. Also, on the right side of that same dialog box shows the bank choices, as well as all the available instruments you can use from within each bank.

Extra note: If you'd like to adjust the chorus/reverb/volume/pan settings within the Cakewalk TTS-1 synth, just double click on the little black and white piano icon underneath the Cakewalk TTS-1 tab (this is what appeared on the left side of the track view when you initially inserted the Cakewalk TTS-1 soft synth at the beginning of this little tutorial). When you double click it, you'll see the TTS-1's mixer/settings dialog box pop up with graphics that include a few virtual faders and a few pots (...or knobs).

Well...I hope that helps in getting you started with using the TTS-1. If you run into any dead ends, please, feel free to ask-away right here in your thread...I, and many others, will be happy to help. Good luck JDZIKOWSKI.

Peace,

Software synth instruments produce no audio. They send a set of instructions to your sound card which produces the audio. These instructions are sent to your sound card via MIDI. To use the softsynth you need a midi keyboard, guitar, or other type of MIDI instrument. There is a software version of a midi keyboard that comes with Sonar, but unless you like adding individual notes one at a time, and all the other associated parameters that midi uses, you are best off with a midi keyboard controller.

In addition, if you use midi hardware, you will need a midi interface to communicate with your computer. Some audio interfaces have these already included.

Actually, it's MIDI that produces no audio. The MIDI data is what tells the software synthesizer what sounds to trigger, which is what you hear through the speakers to which your sound card or audio interface is sending.

I'd like to emphasize that you do not need an external MIDI controller of any kind to use soft-synths. Most, like michaelrb, prefer to have an external MIDI controller/keyboard to program their MIDI, as opposed to having to mouse-click each and every MIDI note and parameter (a potentially grueling and time-consuming task for some). I started out with MIDI in that way. As a matter of fact, I prefer to work without a MIDI controller/keyboard most times, as I tend to be very efficient when I do. However, when I'd like to capture a more "live" feel to some of my MIDI work in my projects, I use MIDI control surfaces such as a MIDI keyboard like an Edirol PCR-500 or a MIDI-capable drum-pad module like a Yamaha YDD-60. To each their own though, depending on what is called for.

+1. This is entirely true. Good point michaelrb.

Peace,

One thing to consider for the MIDI connection, many newer controllers now use a USB port to send MIDI data on rather then the old 5 pin plug.
