Default Audio engine stoppping, slow performance

I have Sonar 8 Producer installed on my laptop to use for working out songs, midi arrangements etc.

This is what I have:

HP Pavillion Laptop
Windows XP
AMD, Athalon XP 1.2 ghz.
700 + mb's ram
20 gig ide HD

I just downloaded the latest version of Sonar 8.3.1 and will install tonight, but was wondering what else I can do to improve performance.

I usually just run Peavey revalver as a plug in on one track and the audio engine stops and the latency could be better..

I use a Tascam US-122 external sound card and ASIO drivers, I set latency at 256.

Thanks!

In mu humble opinion you are borderline shy on processing horsepower for Sonar, no matter what they say the minimum requirement for CPU, RAM, etc might be. So be sure to disable any unused programs or service hogs when you use Sonar on your machine (eg. antivirus, etc.). Strip down your programs and OS to what I call 'drag rail' proportions. You want your machine to be as fast and unencumbered as possible with Sonar. Get everything else off/deactivated that you can. I had the same issues and had to go to a faster machine to solve it. Under very heavy VST use I still get the occasional dropout now, but not nearly as bad as before.

Hope this helps... good luck!

Thanks for the advice. All I am looking to do is use this laptop to write midi drums to scratch guitar, I will use my studio computer for heavy tracking. I will see how much stuff I can shut off.

are you using something like EZDrummer? Because EZDrummer loads all of it's samples into RAM...

..you don't really have a whole lot to speak of on the RAM side..
