View Poll Results: Sonar 8.5: Is it worth upgrading to?
Nah...it's just another release with a few gimmicks that aren't very useful. 2 16.67%
It sounds like it'll be a pretty nasty package of value. It's a fair upgrade price of $99. 8 66.67%
I'm a "fanboy" of Cakewalk and will buy anything and everything from them...rain or shine! 0 0%
That's just great! I just bought version 8 before the "free upgrade" cutoff and feel betrayed! 2 16.67%
Cakewalk blows ass. I hate 'em. 'F' them. 0 0%

I have no idea why I would be considered so special as to receive this type of treatment.

I had a small issue with my 8.5 download that was remedied in about 35 minutes by CS, and have used them in the past without failure. As far as the price updates etc, I think anyone bashing on that is being a bit unfair really. If you decided to wait and missed the chance, that is not the companies fault. I update when they come up each time. Not everyone can do that nor is it something that needs to be done by everyone, but I enjoy it.

I had a bit of an issue with Sonar when I was a beta tester years ago. I stopped using their stuff and decided to try again with Sonar 5 on a new pc as I had heard they got their act together. The update price for me missing several issues of Sonar was STILL more than fair and under $300 dollars which is pretty awesome for what this software is capable of doing.

Some people read the bug reports and decide not to upgrade for those reasons. I would tell those people to stop reading that stuff and buying into it. Most of the guys complaining of bugs and issues are either guys that use 100% of the program's options, or dudes that are causing trouble. Not every bug will effect you the way YOU use the program. I like to consider myself a pretty advanced Sonar user, but because of the way I use the program, I may use 60% of what it can do in all actuality.

So the guy that uses loops or other Sonar functions that I do not use, may have issues that I don't. Or, there mey be plugins or softsynths that are crashing that I don't use. That would not stop me from upgrading to the next version.

All of the above said, if you have personally received bad service from CS or TS, I completely understand your reasons and feel bad for anyone that has any legit gripes. However, they have went out of their way for me and my issues have been pretty petty for the most part. They've made me feel like I was the only customer they had...which is pretty high praise. I don't give out praises easily unless they are earned. To me, with my treatment since being a Sonar customer, I have nothing bad to say about them at all other than sometimes I feel they may rush their releases a bit each year. Good luck with whatever DAW you choose.

Hi Danny,
Thanks for the opinion and observation. I'm glad CW has been good for you. The issue I had wasn't about being late for an update, but more so, the free up grade to those who purchased 8.0 after July 1st, which leaves anyone who bought prior ineligible for the free up grade.. I think the price for the up grades are more then reasonable and I plan on up grading to PE at some point. The issue I had was asking them why only purchases after July 1st were eligible and not getting an answer. I no longer have an issue with it since a friend explained the reason to me..would have been nice to hear it from the source though..

Also wanted to say I checked out your site and the templates tutorial you post was great! Once I get the ball rollin again that little gem is definitely going to save some time..
On another note, you seem to have some good knowledge on drum modules and how they work with sonar, and was wondering if I could shoot ya an email with a couple questions regarding that..

Not a problem and I understand where you're coming from as well. I guess you have to ask yourself..."do I really feel like learning a new DAW and dealing with the possible issues it could bring on?" LOL!!! I sure don't like doing that. I've got Cubase, Logic, PT, Nuendo, Reaper, Adobe and a few others and lemme tell ya...though they all work great and have their own stengths etc....I still think Sonar is the one for me.

Glad ya liked the template vid, thanks. I do lesson videos on just about everything these days. How to use certain recording techniques, proper surgery within tracks...you name it, I can cover it. Hopefully you got a few laughs out of that video as well as I try to come off as human as possible to keep things entertaining. It's no fun to listen to a dude talk all proper and monotone....it's like a teacher...he loses the student if he's not human enough and relaxed.

Sure man, email me anytime...I'll try to sort you out. I did a review here in the synth section about all the drum modules I've tried. Check it out if you get a minute...it may address some of your questions. Talk to you soon and thanks again.

Danny,

Great stuff and thanks for the insight. I've been a Cakewalk/Sonar user since 1994 (Cakewalk 3.0). Every DAW software has its quirks, so I don't expect perfect software, not even from PT (I'm an occasional user of PT LE for mixing only).

Thanks for the 8.0 vs 8.5 vs 9.0. As a software developer myself, that's what I figured (8.5 is a maintenance release).

However, on the surface it may seem disingenuous to charge existing 8.0 customers for a maintenance release. Yes, by definition a maintenance release would technically be 8.0.9 (or whatever oh.point Sonar 8.0 is on right now), but 8.5 is explained as a maintenance release plus feature upgrades. I guess that explains the charge to upgrade for 8.0 customers.

Actually Tony, I stand corrected on that maintenance thing....8.5 IS 9.0 but the Cake staff somehow decided to go with 8.5 instead. They also did feel the need to cut us a small break for dealing with some of the bugs in 8.0.

But yeah, totally with you on this. You know all too well being a Dev how this stuff works moreso than I ever will. Props to you guys for going through the pains of hell to bring us cool things!

No problem! I enjoy you input on this forum (although I sometimes think reading War & Peace would take less time). <jk>

I'm a faithful Sonar user and probably will be for a long time come.

I was also a faithful Texas Instruments TI-99/4a user at one time.

I did read your post about the different drum mods earlier and that's why I wanted to send ya an email about it..
thanks for the help man, very much appreciated,
and with that being said, email on it's way..
