Do you mean patch bay? If that's what you mean:

Buy dbx PB-48 48-Point 1/4" Patchbay online at Musician's Friend

I have one and find it very useful. For what most of us are doing at home it's probably not "necessary" per se but there is a certain convenience to it depending on how your rig is set up. I'd say if you find yourself spending a good amount of time farting around getting your cables hooked up the way you want them, a patch bay may be useful to you.

download the manual from MF if you have time and and incination. That's the model I have and reading the manual is how I learned what normalled, de-normalled, and half-normalled mean. I don't think it's a high priority thing to know (especially if you end up not needing a patch bay after all!) but good culture anyway probably.
