Question phishing site message

I have recently joined this forum and have found to
be a fairly nice place for information. I know websites cost money,
so I wanted to donate a small amount to the forum...however...
when I clicked "donate" on the toolbar, Macafee security sent a message
that this was a phishing site and suggested I not use this site. That would
be shame if this were true, as I find this site very helpful.
Any truth to the message, and if not , why did it appear?

I sent a donation...from what I know the money got into the hands of the right guy...the guy who took the time to establish the forum and takes the time to moderate the forums and keep it nice and friendly...

I also use AVG products to protect my PC, they work great

Nope, no phishing. I'm not sure why it would give that message. Phishing is when you pretend to be Paypal and really just collect the username and password. As you can see when you click on the link to Paypal it goes to the real Paypal. If there is a scam for tricking the browser into that one I'm not aware of it. (And I know some pretty good ones! )

If your security software is making you feel uncomfortable you can simply go to Paypal and send the $1,000,000 (or less ) in unmarked bills to brandon @ recordingreview dot com. (spelled stupidly to avoid spam )

McAfee has a lot to answer for. I was concerned to find this warning on my own web site some months ago, and I complained about it. My web site doesn't even have any advertising or any material hotlinked from any other domain. It doesn't give a service and doesn't take any money. The material is 100% mine.

Never did get to the bottom of it, but uninstalled SiteAdvisor. Used to crash a lot anyway.

In many cases where it appears to be "additional Security" it ends up being more flat out extortion. For example, when you install drivers for an audio interface, it's common to get the "this driver is not signed" message that makes it sound like you are about to get your computer entirely hijacked. All that means is the company didn't pay Microsoft the thousands of dollars to put their driver on a list. From what I hear the additional benefits of this are non-existent, but it sure scares the crap out of people who encounter the error for the first time.

The web has a few equivalents. Pay $500 or this or that so your site is on the "secure list". It's all baloney.

I got a shake-down email from Waves (yes, the plug-in people!) explaining if I wanted "continued support" of the one plug-in I own of theirs, I would have to fork over the cash. This was like $80 on a $300 plug. Outrageous! They explained how it took a "small army' of developers to keep their product compatible with a changing environment of software and hardware blah blah blah blah. "That's a nice plug-in you got there. Would be shame if somethin' was to, I dunno, happen to it." With that corporate attitude, I'm hardly inclined to do any more business with them.

Or Microsoft. Or Wal-Mart - you get the point

Unfortunately I can give you a handful of links to some "bedroom studios" that I know for sure have illegal copies of Waves. What I mean here is that they have 2 MXL mics, an LE version of DAW software, and an entry-level I/O with about $2,000 worth of plug-in software. Something's not adding up here.

Probably doesn't justify Waves' "shoot-em-all first then sort 'em out later" approach though. But the pirated copies of Waves out there is crazy. Same with Ozone.

No worries, mate. (I don't say "mate". I've just been hammered by all the UK and Aussie guys who got my April fools joke a day late and now I'm picking up their lingo.)

Many, many people are pissed at the Waves business model. I've always been a fan of not buying the support until I need it. That works well.

My favorite are the guys using Nuendo and a SoundBlaster card. Yeah right! These guys never seem to finish a record either. I guess there is something about buying something that actually makes you go through the learning curve.

I'll be the first to admit that I run hacked copies of XP. I own like 3 or 4 licenses, but I intentionally enter in the hacked serial number. Why? I think they run better and I can't update them. I consider that an ADVANTAGE.
