Why wouldn't a person know what a "good bass" sounds like? (I'm not trying to be condescending.) a) Every person must have some idea of what they are going for when they record a song. A metal guy knows his guitars are distorted and really liked the sound of And Justice For All or whatever. b) Every person has access to And Justice For All. c) Can you give me an example of when a person wouldn't have a sound in their head before recording? d) There are a billion bass sounds. Korn has good bass sounds. Norah Jones has good bass sounds. They certainly are NOT interchangeable.... as funny as that would be. e) The is a problem with posting "good" sounds. It applies an objectivity thing to this recording thing. It rules out personal taste and tells people there is a certain way that instruments are supposed to sound. I do think you need to be within the window of accepted tolerances, but you are free to do as you wish. Does that make sense? Brandon |

First off i didnt know that the bass guitar made it into the mix on "and justice". I think that its a little harder to hear the full range of the bass with guitars blastin and drums bashin. The fact of where it sometimes sits in the mix can leave room for imagination which can be a good thing. A lot of times a great guitar sound gets its sound with a little help from the bass. Sure Alex Van Halen had a cool snare sound, but i think the way that it fit into the mix and the sound of the instruments around it was part of the reason that it sounded cool. Ill be the first to admit that this isnt the best idea ive ever had Big BD, but wouldnt you agree that sometimes tone can come from the cohesion of more than one instrument as opposed to just that instrument alone. I think its one thing to hear good sounds on an album but how many times have you heard a GREAT bass or drum sound right in front of your hawk? Nothin but love brah |

I think you have a point willjrockstar but your second post shows the problem with the first. You would need to hear the sound in a mix and then hear it solo'd. I can't tell you how often I've listened to bass in riffs while the band is resting or a single snare shot in a rest. To get a sense of what it was like soloed. Then I start thinking the mastering will effect those parts and you can automate changes for this so what the hell am I listening for anyway.

Thanks for replyin trip nines, I wish i would have thought out a little better what it is that im trying to construe before yappin. But i guess what im sayin is,,long story short,, sometimes I come across what i know is a really good sound before me, but sometimes it seems hard to grasp what it should sound like recorded. (on cd), or more importantly what the sound is capable of. |

Trip nines that is the best nick name I've ever had ![]() Your right the principle of what your after is gold. To hear a soloed track of a bass or guitar that you love in a mix from a pro would be awesome. The closest that I know of Is some of the tracks bigduggieface gets a hold of like Stevie Wonder's Superstition or Queen's bohemian rhapsody. He found all the individual tracks on the net.

I am proud to be Canadian. My hood name is the bomb edub357. (yeah the musicians I work with laugh at my squeaky clean usage of the oral language too). It is funny Willjrockstar most musicians I work with feel like being Canadian holds them back.
