Obviously we need contests running at all times.

I think "mix this" is this forum's best feature and is under utilized. User submitted material could boost the frequency and participation of this event.

Shoot out contests are hard to pull off since most of us have limited gear and nothing really to shoot.

Songwriting contests I think could work, half of us here are songwriter/mixologists.

I think the funnest contest would be a "Colab This" or "Making the Band". Teams would consist of 2 people and the topic could be something like "70's music", or whatever the mod chooses. The prize, Brandon's soon to be award winning book?

To sign up, simply go to the "Colab This" forum, find the "70's Music" post and type in "Team 1". The next person that wants to sign up see's there is only one member on Team 1, so he/she types in "Team 1" and PM's their new partner. The next person wanting to sign up types in "Team 2" and waits for a PM. Teams work together to choose a song, original or cover, recording and mixing together.

Dude!!

That's brilliant. I can't speak for Brandon, but that sounds awesome! The site would be sw-a-r-m-ing with active members! Of course, the moderators would have their work cut-out for them, but that's a bridge crossed upon approach. I think that's a great idea. With that, and all of its other content, this site could become the Microsoft (love it or hate it) of its kind. It'd be a lot of fun getting in to all the different debates with such a boomin' community. Mildly-controlled chaos can be quite entertaining, educational, and addicting.

Great idea!

I'm a good finger painter! Oh, you're talking about music; not regular art.

Good idea.

Definitely! I hate the fact that I've neglected this duty. Then again, I have about 75 other duties I've also neglected for Killer Home Recording. I actually want to have so many contests that they overlap each other.

The main reason for this is we have all kinds of people here. We have artist types. We have engineer types. We have hybrids, but in the end we all gravitate towards one direction or another. A singer may not be so into a mixing contest and an engineer may not do so well singing (obviously, I'm the exception ).

Agreed. I actually wanted to keep it in contest form, but also formalize it for my next series of products. That's LONG down the road....maybe 1-2 years.

That was a fun idea, but so was communism.

I had no idea Ryan Oliver could think! Amazing! This is an Oscar winning idea right here!

This "team" thing is incredible. By teaming different types of people the possibilities are endless.

----

One thing I've been wanting to get into is more news based song contests. When something BIG happens, we should have 3 days to throw a song together. It wouldn't be a huge contest, but it would be cool to give away a book or whatever for the guy that puts together the best "Bill Clinton BJ" song or "Michael Jackson Dies" song or "Obama Wins Election" song or "Paris Hilton Sex Tape" song. The fights erupting from this sort of thing alone may be worth it.

This would be a huge promoter for RecordingReview.com in search engine land. I wouldn't be able to buy that kind of promotion.

That's a good problem to have. When my book is finished I'm just going to chill out for a while and kick this site in the butt. (Actually, I have 8 pages of improvements I want to make, but that's another story.)

Yep, just name the files appropriately, zip them up and upload them to a service like MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service.

Please use a .wav format for the tracks. Probably 44.1k, 24 bit.

Send out an announcement to the audio engineering forum with a download url.

The member Audio~Geek has posted quite a few and I have learned a lot from working with the files.
Here's a example link: You want something to mix? Mix this!

Once i get my computer back up and running i will get together something for a mix this competition. My question is do i submit a mixed copy to show how i want it to be arranged? or is this completely up to the guys who are mixing?

The song should be complete so no arrangement would be necessary. Post your best mix possible and a link to where all the stems can be downloaded. They should be wav files and should all start at 00:00 so if you have a tom fill in the middle of the song don't make people line it up.

This poses an interesting question:

Is time stamping a universal standard across all DAWs? I've gotten wavs from protools sessions that were stamped in the craziest places.

Thats exactly what i meant! so i would have to make sure everything starts at 00:00 and still line up correctly when there all together, ill have to put some work in there to make that happen since alot of my beats are made in my emu px7. Thanks for the reply ryan
