Read post number 4 and read the 1st post a bit more carefully.
He was just making a comparison to Linux and their business model, not talking about building Linux systems.

I did read them, however perhaps I was being a bit too granular for you, as the title of this post is an open source recording platform, which you can't do with a windows OS.

And I was also just tossing out an idea for how one might build a turnkey open source box, hoping it might spark an idea or two.

It was a bad title for a thread. I probably shouldn't have ever mentioned open source or Linux as this has become quite confusing.

The idea was to simply pass on the support and responsibility for the computer to the owner and therefor also pass on dramatic savings....just like other manufacturers have done.

So the idea is not to make a profit making support service then?

Id be interested in a computer gaurenteed to run my setup without a problem.
If you used something like the DuXP preinstalled [if you can get copies of xp to sell with the computers] or at least the serials. and you were shipping worldwide [which a lot of places dont seem to do]

Oh, okay. Now I'm thoroughly confused.

Now I understand (I think! ).

After upgrading my DAW about 5 or 6 times over the past 5 years (I had an original Rain Recording Element), I think I'm already doing my own service support. I think.

I surely have a Frankenstein DAW; nothing orginal in the Rain Recording chassis, except for the power supply, which I think needs replacing now.

But if I can get a computer built specifically for DAW much cheaper than a Rain Recording box, then I'm all for it. I'm a computer geek anyway.

Im game for a good solid recording computer! sign me up Theres so many users here with exceptional knowledge maybe we can support this internally with support from member's, maybe that could knock the cost down for the actuall "support"? maybe a way to compensate the users who help with the support would be to give them "special" privleges within the site?

Hmm..I dont think I understand this... You are offering custom built computers for recording purposes with support of $2/min?
The computers will be cheaper than others out there? How? How is there profit in this? and how is it like the linux model? As far as I understand you arent offering anything for free...just the promise of cheaper pcs?
