Default Contest Ideas

Hey dudes,

I've decided that I like having contests. I want to have one going all the time. There is such a diversity (yes, an old, old wooden ship) here at RecordingReview.com and we should be able to give everyone something to do.

We'll definitely be having the annual Christmas song contest in December (I guess we could do it in October. ), but I'm looking tons of new suggestions.

I like the idea of scoring a movie scene. That could be a fun one.

For some reason I want to have a contest involving country music. I suspect I'm going to SERIOUSLY regret this one. (Kind of like that time I WANTED to run live sound). NOT GOOD!

Someone else mentioned having a drum contest. Basically, we provide all the tracks and then everyone can add their own drums. That could be fun.

What do you think?

Brandon

I think all those are great ideas! Especially scoring a movie scene! That could really open up a lot of doors..Maybe a Halloween song for Oct? and then one in Dec for Christmas..

I like the drum contest idea also. Would the provided tracks be set to a click track so people with EZ, SPD2, etc and drum machines be able to submit?

MAybe do a mix this contest, similar to the mix this series that audio-geek has been doing but release one in contest form with good tracks and people vote on the mix they like most. much like the metal guitar wars contest but with a whole song.

The drum contest would be cool. i like the idea of it.

THe fim score would be pretty interesting also

and id be up afor a country song contest...

Take a standard-ish tune (possibly from a different genre, like the Hayseed Dixie project) and do an arrangement of it. Like that... right up my alley. Country's too big to be ignored, as a commercial/artistic concern.

Love the idea of adding drums to something.

Mix contest would be nice.

Like the movie scoring idea.

Thought of an orchestral mock-up contest. Problem is, very few folks have any idea of what an actual orchestra sounds like.

One thread I saw had the idea of doing a new song a la Beatles circa 1964. Like that.

A three minute dance remix of a classic tune, predetermined or not.

This would be great! This is actually one of a number of services I'll be offering on a new website I'm working on. This includes feature films, demo-reels, short films, commercial advertising (jingle-writing), etc. All music would of course be tailored to the on-screen action.

That would definitely be fun. It's also another service I will be providing on my upcoming website tentatively titled "The Segue Station." A contest like this will provide a little more freedom than ever to pit your skills against others on the same song...in a more instantly gratifiable way. You'd have the freedom to go as over-the-top or minimalistic as you'd care to. It'll be easier to separate the talents from the duds. This is something that's much harder to fake. I'll definitely be looking out for this and bringing the ownage! RAAAHHH!

It would be very nice if the contest entry could be used by the author for another purpose later and not live as only something for the momentary event.

We did that last year. It was fun, but it got hard to listen to 100 scary, erie horror movie score thingies. That was a LONG day.

If we did it, we'd have to enforce "pop song" style rules or something. That MAY work. Not sure.

I just remember wanting to go postal after the 45th tune that sounded like one note being held down for 2 minutes in an Absynth preset.

Of course, I never told anyone that, but it was WORK!

I also had to watch much of a Halloween movie marathon (the Michael Myers series) and I have to say that I REFUSE to watch those in the next decade. I think I'll just watch Ghostbusters this year.

Didn't I list, like, half a dozen?

That is the true trick of that synth: using it in a way that doesn't sound like that.
