Anybody want to comment on the R121 vs. Fathead samples on the player from the winning page?

The Fathead sounded good on most of the samples. I didn't like sample #7 with the Fathead, seemed flat to me.

The R121 is a brighter sounding mic and seems to capture a better spatial image. The sound stage was more defined on all the samples.

I just got one. I like it so far. I Tried it with an i5 blended sounds thick. You have to EQ the shit out of it because they dont cross anything over internally but thats how ribbon mics are.

After listening to all samples, the Royer is hands-down better microphone with much more usable tracks. All the Cascade sample had this big, bellowing boom that'd have to come out before anything else happened. Seemed also kinda muffly and ...well just not very good. The Royer seemed to be able to pick and choose good qualities of a ribbon, dynamic and condenser. I'm more of a fan of the Royer, not enough to run out and buy one, but it was definitely cool. I have no lust for the Fathead at all.

Didn't love the AEA one, either.

Those samples are with the stock transformers though right? I gotta believe if you got a Lundahl thrown in there it'd be a very worthy alternative to the holy R121.

Congratulations to the winner by the way!
I'm jealous...
