I love it. I am a huge Opeth fan however so I may seem a little biased. I just love how every album they make has something different so say, so to speak. Heir Apparent is so amazing when played live.

The new album is great but IMO it's only 2/3 of an album. It does not feel complete!
Although I do love the way the first song flows into the second song. There are some very brilliant parts on the album, like that part in Porcelain Heart where it goes "I feel reeds beneath my feet...", that's just pure brilliance. Unfortunately the whole album doesn't shine that way, only parts. That's my complaint. And that's also where Opeth has always let down! However if it weren't the way it is, all the good parts might seem less good by comparison. You know, if you eat a lot of salt you need to eat more and more salt to get the same taste. Also, the song burden is really good at the beginning but it carries on like a jam-band song which I don't like. I can't stand jam bands... just droning on the same chords for 4 minutes pisses me off. I don't like when bands take shortcuts in songwriting! But that's my opinion. All in all I think it's a good album, in some places amazing, but it's not amazing all the way through. |

I'm with gradgt on this one. Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries and Damnation still remain my favorites.
But let's be honest here...it kills just about everything else out there right now in metal. |
