Excellent album indeed, not as heavy as Ghost Reveries. Normally, that would be a bad thing for me, but there is too much other stuff to like about it! I love the experimentation and unexpected part changes. One of 2008's best albums. |

I just heard "Watershed" for the first time today. Great album. The drums and guitars sound incredible. I'm on the edge of my seat at all times. Constantly fulfilling and professional. This band cannot be confused with any others. Utterly unique. |

Yeah, Opeth has been one of my favorite bands for a long time now. I bought the limited edition version of this album that came with the two vinyls and all the extras...Killer stuff. Moodiness contributes to a heavy album as I define it, and this album has "mood." I think their sound (production and songwriting style) is all their own. Mikel Akerfeldt's vocals are the best in the biz for my tastes. His clean is so haunting and serene...his death growls and delivery sound like a freaking 46-ton collossus! I thought Ghost Reveries was great, but this one brought the dynamics back, which made it more enjoyable for me...I never really knew what to expect at first listen. I love their unpredictability! My favorite moment on this album for me is at the end of the second track, where there is this pause that lasts a little longer than what's comfortable. Then, the most unexpected chordal/harmonic progression drops that is so epic and breathtaking that I have to rewind a few times before I'm ready for it to end. There are many moments like that on this album, and I for one will always remain loyal to Opeth...they've earned it with all their releases thus far for me.

Watershed is a triumph. It is a work of art. It is perfection on recording...but it's nowhere near as heavy as Opeth could be. Akerfeldt's growls are slightly less edgy on this record... The composition, as always, is phenominal, and the musicianship and performance of every band member blows me away. It is definately my favorite album of 2008, hands down, and it sets a standard for all other Roadrunner bands. I just...I just don't think that it's as good as their older albums...Still Life and My Arms, Your Hearse are just as complex, but I may be partial to them due to my love of concept albums. |

yeah i agree with most: a great album full of dynamic changes and different styles in the mix. I love it, but then again, I also love all of their other albums. (every disc has at least one of these "uber-riffs and arrangements" at some point) On to the next one!
