KYPCK - Cherno
I stumbled upon this really crazy stuff accidentally, when checking out what happened to the band Sentenced after theyr split-up. It turns out that theyr guitar palyer S. Lopakka joined forces with a producer K.H. Hilessmaa ( who has been in charge of some of albums of Sentenced, HIM, Lordi, Moonspell)... They wanted to do some experimental doom in russian... I don't know what were those guys drinking or smoking while making theyr debut album "Cherno", but the result is extremely impressive...
The thing that strikes you most is the awesome work on guitars and bass. The tone is impossible to describe... Forget digital pedals, forget tube amps and power tbe distortion... That all is sissy stuff compared to this. At some moments it seems like they have recorded it, then distorted again. Or, wait, more likely they played it through a blown speaker and re-recorded it... The result is comparable to Sunnn)))O's sonic madness...
The overall atmosphere of the album is extremely dark and gloomy. You can almost feel youself in the middle of that freezing north-eastern winter night.
But don't get mislead by my expresions of utmost adoration of theyr sonic night... It is not an overcompressed, almost industrial shit that we get so much these days. The legacy of Sentenced can still be felt allthrough the album. It never deserted the melodies or structure...just got a lot,lot darker.
And an extremely pleasant surprise is the vocal work on this one. Nice, strong and clean voice... (I gotta admit that after 12 years of listening to metal you get a bit tired of growling ).
Anyway i rcommend anyone with any interest in heavy music to listen to it. It is not for everyone, hell no, but it is worth to spend some time to listen to this interesting piece of finnish creativity. It is also an interesting piece from an engineering point of view, i still cannot stop raving about the sound of guitars. And also sometimes the drums sound like they are being played deep underground, in a concrete bunker with all the moist and rust and mould...
