Default Every picture tells a story - Rod Stewart

Hard to believe Rod Stewart was once cool but he was and really rocked with it. What I love about this era of his work is how 'loose' it all is. Like everybodys having a really good time yet somehow it all just about hangs together. That goes for the production as well. I don't know if it is the case but the dums sound like someone stuck a single mic in front of them and said go ahead enjoy youself. Maggie May is the big name track on here. If you give it another listen you'll see what I mean - the Bassline sounds like it's being made up on the spot the guitar is slightly out of tune but somehow it works. Rod's singing is superb at a stage before it becam a bit too stylized aa affected. Just love the loose folky feeling songs like Mandolin wind; Reason to believe & Maggie May. Modern pop moved so far away from this relaxed easy going looseness for so long that you couldn't imagine a lot of producers accepting it but I think they should all have a listen. It's life with all it's imperfections and it's capturing the joy of friends playing music together a classic

Yes, it is hard to stomach the kind of shmoozey shlock the Rodster puts out these days. I lost interest in about 76, after Atlantic Crossing, which was the last rockin' Rod album in my opinion.

But 1972 was a whole different story, and Every Picture is a really great album of that year and all time.

1970-72 is probably my favorite era of rock, and bands like the Faces, Small Faces and Rod Stewart and the Faces (all incarnations of the same band) are the main reasons. The last year of Rod Stewart and the Faces he was actually touring with them and off on his own. Stuff the Stones were doing at that time is my favorite of all their catalog.

Humble Pie was an offshoot of the Small Faces, and probably my favorite band of the era. If you like every picture, you'll like HP. Live at the Filmore and Smokin' are two big ones.

I'm just guessing, but I believe The Black Crowes were heavily influenced by this era of rock.

I was stationed in Germany is late '74 and had a chance to see them live. Ron Wood was remarkable back then, and Rod new how to put on a show. Course the Germans knew how to party at a show as well, lol.

You got that Shambolic, the looseness quotient was the prime factor in this genre. Hopped up on corn cob juice and a little greasy to boot. Loose but tight. I never have tired of Maggie May. The bass melody underneath the mandolin is some lit up damn magic.
