| Very new here, but a dabbler in music all my life... started with two grundig cassette decks and used to record guitar and vocals on one, then play it back while recording it plus another part on the other tape deck...repeat until saturated with tape hiss...fun though... did a course in sound engineering back in the heady days of '88, (just so i could record my own demos for free) and got bitten by the bug...gradually began acquiring pieces of equipment..an Atari 1040st, then a technox, an esi 4000, a proteus...then a pc...(then took a while to figure out how to use that), then microphones..audio technica 4033a, sm58, 57, beta 87..then a motu 828 mkii...then a set of genelecs 1029a..then the sub...then a couple of shinybox ribbon mics (very cool), then a tlm103, then a 414...then a tl audio 5060..and am now waiting on a Golden Age pre-73 to be delivered... i record/produc/ program a bit, teach a little sound engineering these days in a college here in dublin, and am finishing a phd on the meaning of music..specifically why/how does music make us move, clap our hands, nod our head, dance about, and why/how does it manage to arouse our emotions...(an area known as music cognition for those who dont know) Anyhow, the phd has radically changed the way i record/ produce/ approach music..the emphasis these days is how to capture the emotion..how to make the music have meaning...so i've stopped using click tracks (unless its specifically dance music), and gone back to starting with the song..usually trying to record a lead vocal very early on, and building the rest of the track around that...re-clicking manually as necessary...the tiny little tempo discrepancies (like speeding up for the chorus, down for the verse) make a huge difference to our perception..and there's good reason for it too it seems...but i wont bore y'all with it here... anyhoo..thats me...and like the title says, "Top of the morning to ye all!" leski __________________________________________________ ____ "A composer is a guy who goes around forcing his will on unsuspecting air molecules, often with the assistance of unsuspecting musicians." |

Agreed. Music is about emotion and if you're able to capture that, you're on the right road. Welcome to the forums.
