Default Recording Songs at home

Hello all, I just quit my band recently and am wanting to just start writing a lot. Two Guitar parts, and bass. Then I want to make my drum beats with a program. And I want to put vocals on the tracks too. I don't want need to sound crazy professional but I would like it to sound good enough that when I'm giving it to people to find musicans they can tell what's going on. I need to know what all I need, program and equipment wise, to do get this up and running. I used to just record it with Audacity and a microphone but obviously the quality was hella bad. I've heard of midi controllers that will hook up to my computer and will make the quality sound pretty good. But anyways, I'm totally lost and definitely need help with all this stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chad

PC or Mac?
What's the budget?

I would choose Cubase, but mostly because I've been using it for close to 15 years, I'm very familiar with it and it does everything I need from it. Sonar is a good choice.

ProTools is probably the most integrated computer solution... hardware and software comes together. But it has fairly poor MIDI implementation compared to the competition so that might affect how easy it is for you to program drums for example.

I'm using a PC and running Windows XP. I already have Ableton Live so for programs I'm okay I believe. I just want something I can run my guitar/bass from my amp to my computer without using the microphone jack on my laptop. But rather a Midi Interface (I believe it's called) to run from my amp to my computer with midi and my usb port. The most I can spend is $150 because I'm a college student on a budget. Once again any help would be greatly appreciated because I'm new to this.

Thanks again,
Chad

Maybe something like this:

M-Audio Fast Track USB Guitar/Mic Recording Interface - eBay (item 120275744511 end time Jun-29-08 11:32:11 PDT)

It would work whether you are miking or running line in

I'd recommend you starting with an audio interface bundled with Cubase LE. I'm big on Cubase and I think it would meet your needs well. Check out the Home Recording Soundcard Wizard and then head here.
