You probably need a reducer or a different cable. Most firewire apps come with a 6 pin to 6 pin cable and a 6 pin to 4 pin cable. The firewire port is a small rectangular slot on your laptop, right? That's 4 pin and is the standard on most laptops.

The 6 pin to 4 pin cab;e will not affect performance, all of the data is still sent, and not compromised. Most cards are compatible with pc laptops, they are universal. Some good express cards are by SIIG and Rain Recording.

In my experience, for the most stable performance, I would recommend the card.

The significant difference between a them is that a six pin firewire port can send power (if it's needed) to the firewire device whereas a 4 pin can not.

An adaptor (I've never seenone though) is definitely not a good idea as the laptop 4 pin is so small, and some firewire cables are quite stiff..I see it getting bent/damaged. But you can easily get a cable with 4 pin one end, and 6 pin the other.

If you buy a card, check to see if the firewire device manufacturers recommend a particular chipset. It's often the Texas Instruments one (TI) so ask what chipset it has. If you use the laptop 4 pin, and the device manufacturers do recommend a certain chipset, check out the motherboard firewire chipset in Control Panel>System>hardware>Device manager>IEEE 1394 bus host controller. (for a PC running XP)

If your device does need power from the port, the card is likely to need a wallwart psu to supply it . My Belkin one has it as an optional extra so check what you are getting if you compare prices.

hope this helps.....
