I've been using Protools on HP Vista Home for a year. Have a CD out on ITunes and Amazon ("You Sing Better Than I Do"), 17 songs I wrote, 10 are blues/comedy, 5 Rock and a couple of pretty ballads. I do performances in Los Angeles. My Protools has stopped working. I get the 'protools has stopped working, windows will close the program and inform you if a solution becomes available' box. I've tried everything on the Digi website, did system restore, uninstalled IE8, uninstalled the IE8 updates, uninstalled IE8 completely (some files were hanging around persistantly), stopped the automatic updates so it doesn't come back, I uninstalled and reinstalled Protools successfully but it still wouldn't open (same message in box). I have sent an email to Digi but you know how that goes, they stall for days then tell you to do things you've already done. Can anyone tell me what to try next? Thanks! P. F. Bacon |

How long has Pro Tools been running on Vista? My first thought would've been if one of the Windows Updates is the culprit, but you already did a system restore. I've never had a problem with Pro Tools (only when Sonar and Pro Tools were installed on the same machine). Can you try "Run as Administrator?"

Thank you for your suggestion. I just tried it, then did a restart. I wish it had worked, I really thought maybe we had this licked, but, no, it's not working, same box. Windows does have a new thing that appeared about the same time as this problem: when I double click on the Protools icon to open the program, a new box, (it's yellow) pops up, windows wants to know if I want to allow the new program to open. I check 'yes, allow program'. Box closes, then I get the window that tells me Protools has stopped working. I also ran a fix on the Protools drive with regedit but that didn't fix it either. Ummm... do you have any other ideas? I'll try anything. pfbacon

A digi tech has sent me several pages of instructions on 'resetting to run Protools as administrator' - it is more elaborate than the other way I did it. I will try their instructions when I have a couple of hours to tinker with it and I'll let you know how it works. One suggestion I read on an engineer blog site was about opening the protools files on the hard drive and deleting 'the first one' (the one the preferences are in, so they say), then shut down, start up and try to open Protools. They say that sometimes protools gets an error in the preferences. I'm apprehensive about doing that, and I'm not sure which protools file is the correct file to delete or what would happen if I needed to subsequesntly change the preferences ... Does that make any sense to anybody on this forum? PFBacon |
