Default Newbie to recording, not creating

I have been asking questions about recording for years and now I am coming to the point that I have the space and capacity to start my own little recording studio for my own projects. I am a musician through and through... I started with clarinet and piano when I was a kid and moved into vocals in high school (yearszzzaaaa ago). Currently I am taking on the guitar and loving it. I have a pinch of experience with band jamming/free-styling lyrics. My inlfuences are largley rock/blues/jazz/folk but I listen to everything I can get my ears near, ranging from Bollywood to African tribal beats to old blues and jazz to opera (Including and not excluding any genre).

My first question- How should I get my firewire set up? Do I need to get an extrenal drive for my pc? I'm scoping the Mackie Onyx system and definitely want firewire no matter what system I get.

Nice to meet e'rbahdy

Firewire is a port for transferring data in and out of your computer. I think we having an issue with vocabulary so could you rephrase the question?

The are definite advantages for having a specific hard drive for the operating system, a separate hard drive for audio recording, and possibly a third drive for samples (if you are into that). I have three internal hard drives in my recording computer. If I used a laptop, I would go with external hard drives.

The Mackie Onyx is certainly a good way to go and you will be happy with it as long as it meets your needs in terms of features. Firewire is the route I've taken with my Presonus Firestudio and I've been very happy.

I do not have a Firewire port in my pc, pardon my technological bliss. I am wondering how I would go about setting my computer up with this port--main goal, to run the Mackie (or any other firewire plug in).
Thanks for the advice.

This firewire is a setup for PCI slots. If you don't have PCI slots you may want to look into the second link.
Newegg.com - Koutech 3+1 Port FireWire/1394b & 1394a PCI Host Controller Model 1314 - Add-On Cards
And for PCIe...
Newegg.com - StarTech 2 Port FireWire 800 + 1 Port FireWire 400 PCI Express Card Model PEX1394B3 - Add-On Cards
