howdy yall, im new on here--but have been playing guitar for over 20 years---yikes--im old. i have recorded very little and have no real experience other than a cassette deck or a boom box. i have been in a couple recording studios with some of the bands i have been in over the years--very exciting to say the least. i am getting into recording on my pc and it is slow going which is why im interested in this forum. im looking to build a new pc for music only and only have about 500 or so to spend---hope my refund gets here soon. i have a usb interface and plenty average mics. i currently use vegas 8.0 and the tascam 1641. i only recorded acoustic guitars so far and want to learn how to record a whole drum set (6-7 mics at a time). i am confused as to how to make this work as when i plug in the mics they all have signal on as many tracks as i put in line (even over guitar parts i already recorded). i guess i dont know how to set it up right--or just plain dont know what im doing. any help or tips would be great. You should re-read the section in your recording software's manual about "arming tracks".

Each track should allow you to select an input. For track #1, you'll want to select input #1 (which is often the left input of 1/2....which will make more sense to you when you jump into this).

If you are overwriting a previously recorded track, it's because you left that track armed when you hit record.

thanx for the info i will try that. also, on the daw there is a menu that shows all the inputs like mic 1, mic 2. mic 1/2, mic 3, mic 4, ect.....it goes all the way down to all available inputs which is like 14 i think. it will only let me select one of those. for the guitar it worked great because i was only recording one at a time. but when i put in the other mics for drums i dont know where to set it---the most it offers is two at a time---mic 1 and 2. i guess my question is this---how do i get it able to record multiple mics or does it matter as i am still getting signal from all mics. i will look at daw on check out the info on arming the track---i would think that i should be able to get each mic setting in its own channel/track and be able to control it as far as level and the like. thanks again for any help---sorry if my questions are mundane---im new at all this and look forward to doing some tracks with a drummer---im excited that its possible to get good recordings with a pc. Correct. One mono track can only take in one input at a time. You could use mic #2 on the second track.

How are you getting signal from all mics with one single input?

That's the idea.
