Thumbs up New to the site...looks cool

Hi everyone. I dig the "no BS" approach I read about the board so I decided to check it out. My name is Bill but you can call me zip if you like. Either is fine. lol

A little about me...

Proud father of 2 awesome sons. IT Analyst. Harley rider. I've done some mastering, recording and have been recorded for voice-overs. Yeah I have the radio voice...lol Mastering (loosely put with my tools) has been my main interest but I'm now offering local bands the free opportunity to lay down tracks for entire projects. I know a decent amount about mic placement, tracking etc. but I have a LOT to learn about mixing. I do build PC's so hopefully I can contribute to the forum in that way...

A little about my setup...(I find it helpful to let people know what you have for troubleshooting)

Windows XP Professional OS
AMD Athlon 64 6400+ 3.2GHz AM2+ Windsor Dual Core Processor
GIGABYTE GA-MA790FX-DS5 790FX ATX Ultra Durable II AMD Motherboard
4GB CORSAIR XMS2 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) memory
1 Tetabyte (3 SATA) hardware RAID 0 (for destination files)
2 x 250GB IDE drives (one OS / one final file backup)
SATA DVD / CD Burner

Logic Audio Platinum v5.5
Various VST plugins
Motu 828 interface
Mackie HR824 Reference Monitors
Presonus Blue Tube preamp
Valley Audio rackmount expander-compressor-limiter
Audio Technica AT4033 condenser mic
Shure SM57 dynamic mic

Toys I TRY and play...lol (I'm a singer)

1980 Ovation electric acoustic guitar
1980 Carvin electric
MIDIMAN Keystation 61

Well I'm glad I found you guys (and gals)! I hope to learn as well as contribute.

Peace.......

Well that makes 2 of us. (Probably only 2 of us, but oh well!). ha ha

Welcome to the forum! You've got some cool hobbies. Are there many Harley riding IT analysts? Just curious.

I see you are using Logic. Is this one of the last versions that ran on PC?

You should post a tune in Recording Reviews. I'd love to hear what you are cranking out.

Yeah a Harley riding IT Analyst who does voice-over work...LOL Strange huh??...and no I'm totally unique. Probably a good thing! The world is much safer that way.

Logic 5.5 was the LAST version for PC's. Sad that it is no longer supported. It's OK however because the software has 100 times the capability that I have used or am even aware of.

As soon as I am done with some voice-over projects I'll start in on the project with these local musicians here in Cincy. It might be awhile but I certainly will throw them up there as I progress. I lost ALL my old projects at my last place. There was a major electrical problem that basically destroyed my PC. I lost everything on both drives and it broke my heart. Sigh....

I know a lot of people were upset to see Logic leave the PC realm. With that said, it didn't really "leave". They just aren't going to make any more of it. If 5.5 works for you, I say stick with it. I have Cubase SX3 and really can't think of a good reason to upgrade to the newer Cubase 4.

Just out of curiosity, how are you getting your voiceover gigs?

Oh after the investment I WILL be sticking with it. I purchased the software (and hardware) when it was V4. Version 5 was a HUGE upgrade. Much needed "mastering" plugins were added. Unfortunately the learning curve with Logic is STEEP. I've owned it for years and I imagine I only use a tenth of the capabilities. lol That is going to change. I just found a copy of Logic Audio Workshop. Been looking for some time to pick one up. Most Logic books focus mainly on MIDI - which I use very little of. This book focuses on audio production.

Funny story about the voice-overs... A few years back I talked with local major studio owners about becoming an engineer. Little did I know as an apprentice you only make 17 grand a year and work 60+ hour weeks...lol Clearly not an option with 2 kids especially at my age.

The thing is - without me saying a word - both owners looked at me and said "have you ever done voice-over work? If you haven't you SHOULD - get us a demo." So here I am...planning my demo. I'll be doing a 30 second intro for a friends local internet radio show and his wife's photography business. It's free but gets me material (and plugged airtime) for my demo. From there I will take it to the studios and Hayman Talent Agency to get some paying gigs! (hopefully!)

That was obviously a few years ago. The studio pay is much less now. I'm not aware of any apprentices who make more than $6 per hour. Most work for nothing.

The voiceover gig is great. I'm sure if you bugged enough local businesses, the word of mouth would spread. By default, your voice is automatically marketed. If it stands out people will request you. If your radio market is anything like mine the local voiceover dudes/chicks are not good!
