Default New to Recording Review

I will be trying to learn some guidelines in moving forward in my home studio. I will be up grading to cubase 5 soon and I will be looking to up grade my computer to faster processors and more memory. I currently use the Tascam US 1641, USB to my computer which has a factory sound card. I have added dual display monitors, running the less expensive Mackie MR 8 active monitors, and low end sure mikes.
My room is pretty good, nice but a small control room with Berringer 4 channel headphone module. I use a low end Mackie board for routing audio play back for CD, live practice sessions, and play back from the computer. I use an old Korg analog DS 8 to trigger my MIDI tracks. I have approx. 15 original ideas recorded with several mixes on each of them. I would say I have improved alot this year, but Im maxing out my CPU with Plug ins and VST instruments. I have to play back at high latency once I put 12 + tracks into motion, and I have to go back to lowest latency to get my play back sinked in. Im sure most of you have been frustrated with this before you got some help fom the pros. Well you are the pros so I am now in listening mode. Gary McClain

Thanks for the threads. I will be looking for advice on upgrading my computer. I would like to stay under a thousand if possible. My preferance would be a new INTEL Quad. I was reading that the new high end AMD was alot of processor for the bucks. Dell has a QUAD with 8 gigs of RAM and a killer hard drive at Best Buy for around $800. If I clean up the crap from the factory and install dual video outputs it might work just fine. What would be the advice from the PRO's out there. Thanks for your time, Gary.
