Default Howdy ya'll from Sunny Florida

I'm Strangedogs (I have a bunch of em too) - Guitarist since the 60's - room full of amps including vintage tubers, SS, Multi-effects, Single Effects, you get the picture... but When I discovered Desktop Recording on my G5 20" Imac I was in PIG HEAVEN. I use Logic Studio 8 (and Mackie Tracktion at times too) and a whole slew of plug-ins. I'm currently using Guitar Rig 3, Amplitube 2 , Nomad Factory's ROCK AMP LEGENDS (an older but very powerful sim) and Logics own GUITAR AMP PRO as my sims and also do occasionally mic up an amp or 2. So HELLO!

    Hey, Strangedog!
I am from the 60's as well and composed my own during college and a few years after. I quit playing for a many years but never sold my '66 Guild Starfire III. A couple of years ago I moved to Conyers, GA and went to a local pub that had open-mike nights and picked the guitar up again. Rusty as the devil but since getting a little better. I bought an amp (Line 6 Spider II)--- not tube but good enough for me.

I want to record a few songs for posterity but have not determined I can do it on the computer without first investing in costly software. Hopefully this forum will lead me in the right direction.

roger49 - nice to meet ya' bud. We live in Jacksonville but my Wife's people all hail from GA... Something about them Georgia Women that suckered me....

It's easy to get started... Are you on a Mac or a Windows Machine? here's some simple stuff I typed up in another Forum:

    HOME COMPUTING FOR REDNECKS

K - I had a Computer - a Guitar - some amps - cables - pedals, etc... including a Zoom G2 ($99 Multi-Effect thing). My Zoom G2 doesn't have USB (not the USB one just the basic Zoom G2 with line in and line out) - what I did was to simply go to Radio Shack - buy a 1/4" -> 1/8" Adapter (mono is fine) - Plug my Ax into my Zoom - run the OUT on the zoom over to my LINE IN on my mac using a standard guitar cable - add the adaptor and plug it in... I recommend using a LINE IN not a Mic In - Get you some software - the PC guys use Audacity a lot I know and they claim it's free - download it - remember your Ax is gonna come from line in in the setup - ARM THE TRACK for recording (don't even have to record yet - just practice) - turn monitor ON (I'm on a Mac so I'm guessing based on all the DAWs I've played with) and you should get your AX coming in! In my Zoom I have settings for LIVE and RECORDING (cabs on and off, etc) - experiment. If you discover your sound isn't FAT enough - then you may need a small preamp (My G5 Imac has a small pre-amp built-in so I didn't need the FastTrack I bought) - I recommend a simple one like this (M-Audio Audio Buddy) - works fine with a computer - just run it in with the adapter method (standard cable in & out so n adapter is needed to convert 1/4" -> 1/8" SOUND IN) Plug yer Ax & GNX3 into it and Voila' - it even lets you add a mic and has phantom power, etc - I got mine at Guitar Center on sale for $49!

    M-Audio Audio Buddy | Sweetwater.com

I discovered with my Imac and it having a built-in small preamp - I didn't need the FastTrack I bought or the Audio Buddy either - your sound might be fine without any of them too - depends on the Soundcard I guess...

If your sound card doesn't have a LINE IN then perhaps you will need an interface. The cheapest I know is the USB FastTrack (M-Audio)

M-Audio Fast Track USB Computer Recording Interface and more Sound and Recording Cards / Audio Interfaces at GuitarCenter.com.

and you can add ANYTHING to the chain - I use my Tubescreamer Sometimes - maybe a Boss-DS1 - thrown in to the FRAY - it's all good a controllable (very tweakable especially with plug-ins) from your computer...

I have 2 older SS amps (Roland 50-watt DAC amp with digital effects from the early 80's and a Fender Frontman 25R - rather plain but has great reverb) with Line Out's on them - run them into my Mac too - set em clean as you can and test out plug-ins and computer effects on them....

tell me computer guitar playin' ain't fun:

oops when you get it hooked up - here's a NEW Amp Sim to test out:

    "FLYING HAGGIS"
Flying Haggis - Virtual Guitar Amplifier from db audioware

I also recommend getting the demos of Amplitube 2, Amplitube 2 "Jimi Hendrix Edition", Guitar Rig 3, and also REVALVER MK II...
