My PB is 15" 1.25GHz, used with mains or on internal battery. The mains is 3 pin - bless them, Apple are thorough and the power plug is wired to earth as well as the other two pins on the wall plug.

Even on listen through there is far too much hiss to be acceptable.

I have used several other mics - none such high gain - with the same challenge.

Is there any way you can post a small audio sample so that we can hear the extent of the problem and what we might be able to do about it. A sample that starts with just the music and introduces the voice such that we can hear the hiss before the voice starts would be helpful... other than that 30 seconds of audio should be enough.

As I said to BK, I can't imagine a vocal performance that wouldn't benefit from even a very small amount of compression.

Here is a sample:

You will hear the hiss start shortly before my voice and end shortly after I stop speaking. The music carries on clean.

I have tried low levels of compression, I can't remember if there is any on this particular example piece.

It does sound pretty bad, and I'd normally expect this to be the result of poor gain structure, but I assume you have that figured out properly with your background.

I'm not really sure where the problem is then but I wouldn't rule out the laptop, or the microphone... it could just as easily be one of these as the audio interface.

I'm sure this isn't the kind of answer you want, but you can remove it with a noise reducer. I used Sony Noise Reduction on it (it clearly should be done on just the vocal track before mixing, but this will give you an idea) and I think it cleaned up nicely.

Getting it right going in is obviously the objective, but sometimes things out of our control prevent this. It's nice to know that in these instances, there are ways out of a problem.

If hiss is a huge problem, the mic preamp has got to go. My low end preamps are very noisy when pushed passed 2 o'clock or so. My Vintech 1272 and Trident S20 has no noticeable noise even when completely cranked. Of course, these pres are not considered 'budget' by any stretch of the imagination.

My Presonus M80 does have some noise but it is exponentially lower than that of my Vintech and Trident.

A compressor is the most abused piece of gear in the recording world.
May be, but this abuse of the compressor has defined the sound of rock and pop music. Now it's abuse is responsible for LOUD mixes that the kids love and I hate.
