First off, a big hello to everyone on the forum!

I'm in the process of setting up a basic home recording studio, purely for personal use.

My plan is to record guitars (acoustic + electric) and vocals using Cubase LE or SX. All on a windows based laptop.

From reading the guides here my setup will be as follows:

PreSonus Firebox Audio Interface
Shure SM57 mic
Behringer C3 mic

Now, the only area I don't have any experience with is MIDI. Basically, what I want to be doing is creating my own drum loops and the occassional virtual instrument. Now for this I would need a MIDI keyboard right? Or is there a way to do this purely software based?

Anyhoo, I'm sure there'll be many more questions once I get started recording

You can input with all the various MIDI controllers out there or with a mouse. Programming drums with a mouse is how I've been doing it and it's not bad. It's A LOT of work to make the drums sound real, but for electronic type stuff, this isn't a requirement.

Once I get setup with everything I'll see what I can come up with software based, and may eventually look into a midi controller of some sort.
