The Emu 404 usb is a good one too.

I didn't know the mo6 had the cubase integration. I read about that for the Motif line.
It sounds great.
Instead if running midi out to the synth and then audio back into the DAW for each track it should work as a simple VST plugin.
I suppose it will still be limited by the total polyphony of the Mo6.

Hi PPT, Thanks, I'll check out that one too.

Yeah, I'm excited to check out the using the MO voices as VST plugin option after I get a sound card!

Okay guys, I finally got my Tascam Us-144, but now I can't figure out what's supposed to be connected to what, to get a signal in CuBase!.... which I upgraded a touch to CuBase LE4 that came with the Tascam, as opposed to the CuBase LE that I got with my MO6.

I've been reading the manuals and any online documentation I can find, and couldn't get squat for help from Yamaha, Steinberg, or Tascam, without all of them referring back and forth to the other!

I've certainly become much more educated in the last week about all this stuff, but now that I have the Tascam, I fee like I'm starting all over again as far as setting things up.

So any help with what should be plugged into what, and what my settings in CuBase LE4 should look like would be appreciated.

As I have it set up right now...
  • I have a S/PDIF cable from the DIGITAL OUT on the MO6 to the DIGITAL IN on the Tascam US-144.
  • I have the firewire/ USB cable going from the firewire slot on the Tascam to USB port on my laptop.
  • I have 1/4" patch plugs going from the L/mono and R OUTPUT on the MO plugged into the L/Input and R/ Guitar INPUT in the front of the Tascam. (Somehow, I don't think this is correct, but I don't know, that's why I'm asking)
  • I have the L/R LINE (Red and White audio plugs) from my M-Audio monitor/speakers going to the INPUT plugs on the Tascam.
  • I don't have any MIDI plugs plugged in at all, because I thought the S/PDIF cable is supposed to eliminate the need for that. At least, that's the impression I got.

In Cubase, I have my Device Settings all pointing to the US-144 driver in the drop-down boxes. In the VST System Link dialogue box, I have ASIO Input set to US-144 ANALOG IN L, and ASIO Output set to US-144 ANALOG OUT R.

After that, I have to figure out what my setting should be in the MO6 on top of it, like whether my output should still be set to USB or if I should change it to MIDI, etc.

I hope that's enough information to give you an idea of my setup.

I can always post that question on Motifator.com forum, which yes Sparqee, I did discover that forum as well, a lot of great information there too!

Thanks again in advance for ANY help, I really appreciate it!

I'll post this over in the Troubleshooting section of the Forum too, just in case...

"Haha! Good point Dave! I'll use that argument if she gets upset at me for buying any new gear. "But honey, think of all the money we're saving compared to 20 years ago!" ; )"

Yeah, let us know how that works out !!!

Just to prevent any confusion; USB is different from Firewire. I don't think he TASCAM US-144 supports Firewire so I'll assume you mean that you have a USB cable connecting the Tascam to your laptop. This USB cable moves digital audio and Midi data back and forth between your laptop and the Tascam. If you use a pair of S/PDIF cables to connect the Yamaha to the Tascam then you should have digital audio coming from the Yamaha into the Tascam (and therefore into your laptop via the USB cable). The way to test this is as follows:
1. Connect everything as mentioned above
2. Plug some headphones into the Tascam
3. Turn the Tascam monitor mix knob to 12 o'clock
4. Turn up the Tascam "Phones" knob
5. Play the keyboard

You should hear the sound of the Yamaha through the headphones. If this works then you have digital audio going from the Yamaha to the Tascam via the S/PDIF cables. If you don't hear the Yamaha then you may need to take a look at the output settings of the Yamaha to see if S/PDIF needs to be turned on or if audio needs to be routed to that interface or something (sorry, don't know the details of how the Yamaha works).

Once you've got digital audio flowing from the Yamaha to the Tascam you need to see if it's getting to your laptop. Fire up Cubase, add an audio track and activate that track's monitor button (see the Cubase manual if you're not familiar with tracks and monitoring).

Once you've got sound going all the way through from the Yamaha to your laptop you've got to get the laptop to send control data to the Yamaha. If you just want to use midi you can connect the Yamaha to the Tascam with a pair of midi cables, but if you want to use the fancy VST support between Cubase & the Yamaha then I suspect that you will need to connect the Yamaha to your laptop with a USB cable. Hopefully your laptop has more than one USB port. I wouldn't recommend putting the Tascam on a USB hub since that might degrade your data throughput but if you only have one USB port on your laptop then give it a try.

I'm also guessing that you need to install some kind of Yamaha software (i.e. a VST plugin) to your laptop in order to get the Yamaha to show up in Cubase as a plugin.
