Unhappy Hi, all. Awesome website! Please help!

First off, thanks for putting together such a great, no-nonsense forum. I'm a long time musician, but not too savvy in the digital recording arena. I still am using a digi 001 box with Pro Tools LE 5.3. No external mic pres, no mixers, no problems. But.....

As of next week, my complete gear will consist of:

1. 003 rack, Pro Tools LE 7.4,
2. Windows XP Pro
3. Yamaha Motif XS7
4. Kurzweil PC88
5. AKG C414 XL II, Shure SM58, and some terrible Behringer condenser mic
6. Focusrite Liquid Channel channel strip, which I really love
7. Presonus Blue Tube Dual Path mic pre

I have absolutely no idea about how to handle the interface between the Liquid Channel and the 003 rack.
I don't know what type of cables to use or the I/O path from one to the other.
I'm not sure if I should or even could send the keys thru one of the pres.

So, given the gear listed above, and considering my obvious lack of expertise, could someone help me construct the proper path between the Liquid Channel and the 003, what type of cables and/or converters?

Thanks much!!!

How are these? I've had my 414 (I forget which one off hand) for years and I've had a reawakening with it as of late.

Doesn't the Liquid Channel have converters built in? I heard they were AES only? What kind of digital inputs does the 003 have?

I think it's an awesome mic, a little brighter than the classic C414B-ULS, but I love it for male vocals, overhead drums, and acoustic guitar. I used it on a male jazz vocalist, put it through the Liquid Channel's emulation of the Avalon 737, put the drums through the emulation of the Neve 1064 pre.......unbelievable. But I only know how to do this live through a mixer. I've never used it with Pro Tools...

The digital inputs on the 003: S/PDIF I/O, 2 Optical Toslink style connectors for ADAT Optical (8 channels of I/O) or S/PDIF Optical (2 channels of I/O).

Honestly, I don't know what that means.

The Liquid Channel has XLR Mic input, XLR Line input and output.
It also has AES/BEU input and output.

So, I know I'm an idiot, but...

QUESTION 1. After mic input, where do I go into the 003. I've been just going out from xlr line out to analog input on the 003.

QUESTION 2. I'd love to put my Motif through the Liquid Channel, but I get a tremendous hum and no sound.

I DON'T THINK I UNDERSTAND THE RIGHT KIND OF CABLES TO USE, OR MAYBE I NEED SOME CONVERTERS OR SOMETHING. COULD YOU PLEASE LEAD ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION?

THANKS......... Marc

Your 003 does not have AES which is what the Liquid Channel uses. So I'd say just stick with the analog route. I have no idea why they didn't put S/PDIF outs on the Liquid channel. It's, by far, the most popular connection type.

You can only go mono (unless you have two Liquid Channels) but there is no reason why this hum should occur. I'd use standard instrument cables (although you may try TRS). I have a feeling it's a bad cable.
