Default Greetings from Canada

Good day eh? Greetings from the Great White North!

First of all I'd like to say how much I'm enjoying reading this site. I've already learned quite a bit. Guess I should say a little about myself.

I'm in my late 30s. I've grown up with music all my life (successful producers and musicians in the family) but never really pursued or explored it until recently. How that came about is for a completely different list...

My workstation is an Athlon XP 2600/1Gb RAM/250GB SATA2. Soundcard is a Delta 1010LT. This is all running under XP home at the moment which I'd like to change but I'll breach that in another post. I'm recording with an SM57. It's just me and my guitar. A new (to me) Ovation Custom Legend which I'm so falling in love with. Midi is done from an M-Audio Axiom 49. Oh yeah - software is currently Cakewalk HomeStudio XL 4. I'm very happy with the hardware and software.

As much as I'm enjoying writing and recording I'm also really enjoying the engineering and production process. I guess I like that picky detail work although I still have to learn when to stop tweaking and move on...

I'm still in the steep part of the learning curve but I'm having a great time. The kind of stuff I'm doing is some mostly folk or acoustic rock type songs. One song has come out distinctly country which I've never really been into but I'll go where ever the song leads at this point.

Biggest problem at the moment is monitoring. Good headphones are next on my (large) shopping list. I'm just using a pair of Plantronics at the moment - I think they're for gaming. Suggestions?

Anyway, when I get the cajones I'll post something to bash.

Thanks again guys and gals and sorry for the long post...

I like Sennheiser HD580's (HD600's and HD650 are even better for even more $$$) though they are open design so no good for tracking. If you want to track with them, HD280's are good... just not as comfy as the others.

Not sure why you'd want to change from XP Home. I'm not sure Vista is ready for prime time yet, certainly not for musicians. XP Home is a fine choice.

I should have been clearer. I want nothing to do with Vista - ever. I'm planning on moving to a Mac platform for at least one of my systems. That said I think I'll take my questions around this issue to one of the other forums as I don't think this is the place for it.

I'll look through the Audio Interfaces forum and probably post on this issue there.

Take care,

PS. Actually ended up in Home Recording Questions, not Audio Interfaces...
