Default getting started, and confused...

Alright, so I'm pretty new to recording and am interested in getting into it a little more seriously. I've recorded a couple of acoustic songs with a friend for a battle of the bands but that's about it. As of now I'm using a cheap mic that came with my computer, or using an adapter to plug my guitar straight into the computer via the microphone jack, and Magix Music Maker (some free software I found online).

I think I'm planning on buying an Sm57 mic and i'm not sure all of the other equipement I need. Do i need an audio interface, or can I get by plugging straight into my computer like I have been? I'm not sure about other things like pre-amps, soundcards, monitors, etc... I'm trying to get by as inexpensively as possible, college is coming up. I've read a lot of the intro articles but i'm still pretty confused.

Any help would be great,

Robbie

I'd HIGHLY recommend getting a real deal audio interface. See my Home Recording Soundcard Wizard.

Check out the Member's only guides. There are several there that would be perfect for you.
