Default Take All The Plugins Off The Vocals

*I'm in the middle of mixing the most important song of my recording ?career?. I feel that the song I'm mixing right now has a better chance of becoming a hit than any song I've ever ...

That happens to everyone. Try limiting yourself to a channelstrip plug or either just 1 eq and 1 or 2 comps (depending on how dynamic the part is)...

if you get in a rut and cant get the low end to cut/shelve right, then do the opposite, shelve up the mids/hi's... I call this process the George Costanza principle - when I do the opposite of what I'd normally do... everything works...

The single channelstrip concept seams like a good idea. I really doubt if guys mixing on SSL or Neves are running the vocals through 7 processors simply because even big studios only have so many compressors, EQs, etc.

As long as I realize that I need to go back and check my original tracks, I'm good to go.

I was drinking beer with producer pal who has several platinum records on his walls. He was talking about how if you try to make something great, you are just going to screw it up. "Just do it!" was what he said. He basically implied that you don't necessarily make a record great in the mix. You mix it and whatever comes out comes out. You need to do your best, but sometimes doing your best is "just mixing it" and not trying too hard.
