Lyrics aren't that important IMO. Vocal melody is the key. Green Day's Dookie album was full of drivel yet I remember it with affection

Disagree. Music and lyrics should work together.

And this is the difficult part - if you aren't able to DO this already, it's virtually impossible to explain without being contrived...

Use some minor scale ideas when you want to convey sadness, major scale ideas to convey happiness, strong emotional impacts are created by focussing on the down beat, more complex emotional impacts by involving the back beat and in between beats, careful use of melodic complexity to determine how accessible your music is (you CAN write in 23/16, but its really hard to follow if you aren't classically trained in music).

These concepts are only related to the music behind the words. They don't help you write the words. Any words will do, the main point is determining what is the best melody for those words to convey your message and achieve your goals.

It is REALLY hard to do well. There are only 52 songs that will occupy the top spot on the Billboard chart each week of a year. Bear that in mind.

I'm looking for iMAGES in your account of your life with the accident. No one can FEEL what you went through or how things are now, unless you make it believeable and the way to do that is to let yourself fEEL it all over again and use words that describe the whole thing that went down- words that paint a picture.
