I have a notebook that I used for years to jot down ideas whenever they struck (I carried it in my back pocket at all times), but it's also filled with notes that were written later on when I read it back along the same "what was I thinking?!" lines. This is why the band I currently write for has only 5 complete songs after about 4 years jamming together ![]() Music comes fairly easily to me (at least the pop-punk stuff does anyway ), but I totally suck at lyric writing. If I could get away with just having one line in every song I'd be OK, but fluffing my ideas out into full songs is where I usually run into trouble. So far at every gig we've played, I've spent about an hour before our set re-writing lyrics to one or more songs, then completely forgetting what I've just written once we start playing . See if you can find our youtube videos for footage of me going "yadda-yadda na na na blah gaaaagghh!!! Fuck!" etc.

Man can I relate to this. I have dozens of steno note pads with lyrics and thoughts. Just recently started revisiting some that are over 20 years old and thought the same thing. Good point Brandon, maybe I do need to look with a different eye so to speak.

i think my main problem is just being scared of exactly writing a bad song... and i suck at writing melodies thow lyrics are pretty good to me... i have found for avout every 20 songs I write i have between 2-5 good lyrics and about every say 50-100 i have on or two that could become hits with a little work i also think my lack of hving some equipment write now gets me but i heard a song that john rich released that sucked and thought of good it could be and rewrote it ill pu the lyric below to me i dont like it... is it just my conscience not exactly done yet I saw you today you looked like you were okay it left me speachless as I watched you walk away me im good too though life is a lot harder without you sometimes i lay in bed thinking of the words I should have said I'm trying ot forget the good times we had and it made me sad that things had to end so bad your lo-ve is what im hold-ing on-to and all the good times that we once new and when I put it all together theres only one thing I kn-ow is true im never gonna find another you i wish youd give me a call it be nicce to ta-lk to a-gain it hurt when our relationship had that fall and you never reply to any message that i send no matter how much i try i cant get you off my mind you wouldn't believe the hell im going through your lo-ve; is what im hold-ing on-to and all the good times; that we once new and when I put; it all together theres only one thing I kn-ow is true im never gonna find another you mabye some day youll come back and say hey and oh yeah baby bye the w-ay your lo-ve; is what im hold-ing on-to and all the good times; that we once new and when I; put it all together theres only one thing I kn-ow is true im never gonna find another you |

Do not ever be afraid of your own art. Ever. Unless it calls for you to blow your brains out. Then it's probably not art, but something a medical professional could help with.....

At any given second during the writing process (small or large) my brain is going up and down from one place to another. Sometimes I can't get stuff on the paper fast enough. The inspiration and drive you're feeling one second can be totally different from how you're feeling the next second. I personally hate it sometimes because I get frustrated, but then again....it can lead to moments of genius. And yeah, this is my first post, lol. So, hey all! |

Before getting into writing more seriously , I used to read about the 99% perspiration , 1% inspiration thing . And my output was .....well..almost zero . Then I adopted the idea of working at it regularly ( an hour before work everyday for over a year now ...writing a line or two , listening to good writers , reading about different approaches etc ..). My appreciation and grasp of the craft has increased 100 fold , I'd say . I wrote about 25 tunes in the past year ( a few posted on this website ) that I'm totally satisfied with and would be happy to share, pitch , or play live . The point being that , like anything else worthwhile , I think you have to work work work and not just wait for the inspiration to hit . It's been very very challenging , frustrating , and not always fun ....but looking back at the year's output is like looking at the house you built with your own hands TOTALLY REWARDING AND AFFIRMING . keep at it ....
