Weekly Assignment #1 - Punk

Write, record, and upload a Punk song as a reply to this thread. As this is the first assignment it can be any type of punk you want. So the classic punk of NOFX and Rancid through the modern punk of Blink182 and Social Distortion is allowed. Basically, whatever you think constitutes punk-esque music is fine.

Due Date:

6:00pm on Wednesday, November 4

The Rules:

Write, record, and upload a song in a week that fulfills the assignment.

By "write” I mean the material must be brand new (no using old unfinished ideas). Kudos if you write lyrics with melody along with the backing music (ala, guitar, keyboard, bass, horns).

The recording part is open in that you can make a simple one track tune or a 32 track epic. The quality of the recording only matters in that you get your point across.

To upload just reply to this post and attach your MP3.

The Point:

Stretch your mind and creative potential. Learn how to write in different styles than you’re accustomed to and gain appreciation of other styles of music.


I’ve attached an example I wrote and recorded in an afternoon a year or so ago. No, you don’t have to make your voice sound whiney like I did.

Um, since when are Social D "modern" punk? They're around since the 70s... Just an observation
As for the task, I suppose it would be cheating to upload any of my already written punk songs?
I reckon if I get time during the week I might have a stab at this - I'm trying to write new material for my band anyway...

Lol, I've never listened to them much and always thought they had a modern punk sound. Kinda like I think Bad Religion has a modern punk sound (I do know they've been around forever ).

Yeah, that would be cheating but since you caught me being dumb and this is the first assignment you can go ahead and upload an old song. You'll just have to write a new one this next week too.

Anyway, I just recorded a song I started writing the night I posted the assignment. It's not even slightly great or anything (just a couple guitars and horrible singing) but it was fun. It is called "Let me go".

I wasn't paying attention to the forum recently, so I only noticed this assignment today. Not much time! We made the following old school punk in about three hours. I play drums and bass and a friend does guitar and vocals. And my wife is also singing in the background, if you listen closely

So that should give me a couple hours I hope And since the post times thing has not been fixed yet who will know
I saw this post last week and thought it was a great idea. So I layed down some tracks that day and then my computer died.
So give me a bit, I'll do up some vocals and I'll have a mixed song about computers dying...

I love your song! Both my wife and I had a laugh at the funny lyrics and the I really dig the type of punk feel you were going for.
