I REALLY dont like websites where you vote on peoples music. Because of the averaging and the range of different audiences voting, artists that are excellent in one particular genre and have edgy/different songs are invariably going to divide opinion - a rap lover isnt going to rate highly a folk song. So these artists, who are often brilliant at whatever genre it is they do, end up with between 4-5/10 after all fans of the genre have given them 10 and everyone else about 0. Invariably it is the average/blandish but "well produced" (or just mega-compressed) songs which recieve about 6-7 from everyone that edge out winners/top of the charts. Being pretty bland they dont bring out any strong emotion and so you just give them an average score, and add a couple for being well produced. Just look at Slicethepie! (if you havnt heard of it, its a similar thing - you submit a song, it gets voted on, the best ones go through to a financing thing where you can pay for them to make an album) Can anyone name a single artist who has won slicethepie and has had critical, or even commercial success? I dont think I can name one, let alone any that have been in magazines/tv etc... with lavish praise being lashed on them. The bands which have success, critical and commercial are often loved and hated in equal measures, and so would bomb on these such websites. But in real life that doesnt matter, because you are after a target audience... Look at Coldplay (extreme example) You might say, hey they have sold 30m albums so they arent affected by this, but i would be prepared to bet my cat that at least another 30m people hate them to the bone. Sorry, rant over ![]() I was thinking more of what can we do with our .com/.whatever personal websites that would keep our audience interested that isnt offered on myspace on any other such free site.
