Default Getting Shows

I noticed on this forum that most threads deal with getting exposure on the internet and whatnot. My bands problem is getting shows. We are from a fairly small town, maybe 5000 people. There is a large city about 20 miles away with i think 60000 people. I need to know some good places to start getting shows. We can basically play anwhere. we have a full pa and we just need some suggestions to start. There isn't really any help from other local bands because there isn't any. All of them have broken up. Thanks alot
Julian

Where do you live? If there is a neighboring city of 60,000 people then what the hell are you all wondering around in a town of 5,000 people! If you guys have a good sound, call bars around the big city, talk to clubs, visit their venues, bring along any CD's you have of yourselves, if you don't have any get making them. How foolish would this sound, "Club Owner- Sure we'd love to have a band play here do you guys have a cd?" "No, but we do have a myspace..." haha Put all your songs together burn them to a couple cd's and go to the places and distribute them. If your a punk rock band, your scene would def. not fancy a Country bar or a hardcore biker bar, so know the place your checking into. If you have never played a show, start small with your town first to get the jitters out of the way, this will help boost confidence! ROCK IT!

The secret is as above. You won't get anywhere without knocking on doors, introducing yourselves, and handing them a demo CD or otherwise.

Since you have your own PA system, you can be very flexible about where you play, you may have to create your own concerts to start, or offer to play for free. If you're any good, the club will be begging to have you back (even against some of the silly rules I've had pubs tell my band - they all go to the wayside once they hear the first song ), with pay.
