Default Anyone doing the myspace record deal contest

I got the e-mail a while back.. its pretty easy to enter and seems like a no risk deal. I thought I'd through it out there cause theres only a few days left to enter a song. Im at work and dont have the link, but it should be easy enough to find by searching "myspace record deal"

Im seeing advirtisments on ebay and such for "100000 views win the myspace deal" so I hope they arent using myspace stats to declare winners as it will be largely an artificial representation of anything..

I entered, posted a bulletin about it, and I got like 10 installs. However, the tracker thing said only 1 people installed it. So their system doesn't work and it pissed me off. After much thinking, I realized it's just a lame way of Toyota advertising themselves. It's also a popularity/spamming contest. I'm just not into that. There are other ways to sell out without losing your dignity. xD

It doesn't seem that MySpace has gotten the concept worked out yet. Strategically I think it's smart for MySpace to get into the marketing, promotion, and possibly development arena. Like it or not, MySpace has become the playground for original and indie music.

Myspace has basically become a band webpage for me. The networking part seems to have picked up and moved to FB and twitter. The contests may be the last gasps of desperation to hold on...

I think you're right and MySpace may be grasping that concept. MySpace has really become a good place to promote your own music, especially in the local and regional scenes.

If Facebook ever picks up on this and implements a bonafide capability for bands to promote themselves, then MySpace will really be hurting.

MySpace has been making incremental improvements to the Band MySpace though; although it took them awhile to crack that nut on the music player...sometimes it worked; sometimes it didn't, limits the number of songs, etc.

Well I haven't given up on myspace, and I agree for music they still have the edge with the player and all. My concern is that a lot of the potential fans that would come in to contact with original bands on myspace are simply spending more time on facebook.

Well the Screamo / Christian Rock bands in the Southeast are strictly MySpace. Most don't have a Facebook account.

How do I know? I have twin boys, 16, who have been in an original band for the past 2 years. They live and thrive on MySpace. One of my sons has his own band promotion "company" on MySpace. Bands get booked through their MySpace page. My sons' band has almost 85,000 profile views with a couple of their original songs posted about a year ago at 25,000 plays each. They get their own bookings/gigs through local promoters on MySpace.

Good to hear! I still rely on myspace for a lot of promotion and bookings. At my advanced age I'm not really looking for rock stardom. We are small time and our fans are usually in their late 20's or 30's...but your son's success gives me some hope that this will continue to be a viable source to get the word out. The general trend I refer to is real however, even if it doesn't describe your son's demographic...

I really, really hope that Facebook does something for musicians. It is clear that MySpace is dying, and a lot of us rely on it for promotion/everything.

If any of you are on the same boat, I suggest you start expanding.
