Default Why Doesn't This Work?

Hi. I'm trying to record one instrument through a TASCAM US-144 onto my Toshiba laptop via Cubase LE. I'm monitoring the sound from the headphone jack on the TASCAM box.
I can hear the signal on the 'phones, I see the lights on the TASCAM box in response to my playing stuff.

I've got the TASCAM box selected on VST Multitrack, I've got it selected in VST Inputs...but I cannot make anything show on the meter! So I can't record anything. Last night I chased this around for two hours before something miraculously changed and I was able to record a couple of tracks. Today I'd like to edit one and Cubase can't hear me anymore.

How do I fix this? Thanks.

Thanks. That has a little more than came with the copy. I did what it said to do, including the restart. Nothing. I decided to re-setup my TASCAM box as the VST Multitrack. I hit okay.

On a whim, I decided to push the Control Panel button on the VST Multitrack setup dialogue box. Normally is says a lot of things. Right now it only says:

Driver version1.10
Device: None found

Try a different USB port and/or cable. something is really not right.

FYI, I've seen a billion problems with the tascam interfaces

I will. Thanks.

BTW, a restart of the entire machine seemed to get a little work out of it...for who knows how long?
