Default Trigerring VST Instruments via Computer Keyboard

My friend just showed me how he can play and record parts of a Audio Unit Synth in Logic Pro with just his computer keyboard , pretty cool.

Does any body know if this is possible in Cubase SX3?

Peace

Adam

I don't recall a function like that in Cubase, but I could have missed it. I'm not in the studio to check on it right now either.

I have Cubase 4 and I don't think it is so much a function of Cubase as the particular VST. On the Cubase side, you would have to somehow map the keyboard to piano/midi values and then define the keyboard as a midi controller. It would be handy for auditioning vst patches but I can't imagine using it to really try to do anything musical. But, then again, there are those who actually tap out drum beats one voice at a time with a mouse, so anything is possible.

I've never heard of anyone doing this. It seems like it would be limiting to me. If it was me, I'd just buy a cheap old MIDI keyboard. The keyboard I use as a MIDI controller goes for $40 on Ebay (Roland XP-10).

you can do it in logic by pressing caps lock - I'm not sure if this function is in Cubase.

Please don't tell me that. I bought mine over a year ago and I know I paid way more than that. Please say you're exaggerating. Wow.

Well it looks like they are going up now. I'm guessing some modern throwback new wave band said they used one for some sound or something because they are going for over $100 now. I know I checked Ebay about a year ago and the buy it now was $40 for several of them.

Keyboard players are notorious for chasing sounds that suddenly they think they don't make anymore. I bet my Casio CZ101 would sell for a hell of a lot more than I think. Guitar players have that "pay too much for vintage" too, but discontinued keyboard models see price jumps on the used market within 18-24 months. Sadly the same is not true for my originally $1000 Roland VS840 8 Track, that I would now be lucky to get $75 for, even with 25 zip discs to go with it.

Yeah, I hear you! Luckily I never bought a standalone recorder, but the resell value on these things is nearly zero!
