This is heads up to anyone trying to run Cubase LE on an intel based Mac. I got Cubase LE bundled with a Presonus Firebox, and I loaded it into my brand new iMac. I started a project in order to learn the program, and I've been noticing some computer glitches: Sometimes the first few seconds of a track that is recorded has no sound, although the display shows the waveforms. Also, there are audible clicks recorded at points of punching out. After visiting the Steinberg website, I found out that Cubase LE doesn't support universal binary and therefore doesn't work well on Intel-based Macs. Intel-based Macs have an imbedded program called 'Rosetta' that allows them to read non-universal binary programs like Cubase LE, but programs like Cubase don't run as well using Rosetta. (My new iMac has a Core 2 duo processor @ 2.4 gHz) Now I am pretty much forced to upgrade to Cubase 4 now, or switch to a different software system. I worry about whether Cubase Studio 4 or Cubase 4 will work correctly but according to the Steinberg website, it should. Anyone out there using Cubase 4 or Cubase Studio 4 on an iMac? I upgraded to Cubase Studio 4, and it works great on the Intel Mac. However, I'm suprised that your Cubase LE is "not receiving the signal". When I had Cubase LE, it worked, but it didn't work very well. In fact, it still worked well enough that I was able to record a song using it. The problem I had with Cubase LE and my iMac was that scrolling through a song was very "jerky"; sometimes when punching in there would be a delay before it actually started recording; and sometimes parts of tracks seemed to "disappear". However, I always got a signal from my interface. You might want to make sure you have everything set up right, although I think that if you stick with Cubase, you will definitely need to upgrade. A good place to check would be Cubase.net. Post your problem up there and within a day they will post an answer for you. You have to sign up though. Overall, I am very happy with Cubase Studio 4 and the iMac, and I'm just finishing up my first song on it...I'll be posting it in the Recording Review Section in the next few days. |

I'm using Logic Studio 8 and also Mackie Tracktion 3 - I ditched Cubase long ago (1.06 days). Mackie Tracktion 3 seemed totally BIZARRE after using Logic - then it dawned on me - IT IS SO SIMPLE - don't make it complex... I recommend either one for a great Mac DAW. And I'm on a 1st gen 20" G5 Imac. Still strong as a bull though so far. Gonna MAX out the memory this year - run her till she drops then I guess it's on to an Intel Machine (rather sad for an old PPC guy).

Maybe it's dumb luck, but Cubase LE has worked quite well on my 2.33 Macbook Pro. Using a Presonus Firestudio interface, I recorded a live show to 8 tracks, mixed, mastered, etc. using Cubase LE and everything was flawless. Other than the occasional application crash (in post), it worked very well. Actually, I had more problems with the Firestudio controller software, eventually just bypassing it. For a free software package, LE is hard to beat, but I think when I upgrade, it will be to Logic Pro 8.

Hi, I'm on a PC and Cubase LE doesn't receive the signal either. I have a new Presonus Firestudio Tube. The Firestudio works great on my dual Xeon workstation using Cakewalk Sonar Producer but not on my laptop with Cubase 4 LE. The Firewire control panel shows signal but I can't get anything in Cubase....even after working with Presonus and Steinburg tech support (steinburgusers.net). No one has an answer. It appears that you guys were talking about the same issue only with Intel based Macs. My dual Xeon system is fairly old but it works great with a different DAW. My laptop is less than six months old so the firewire hardware should be ok. |
