Audio mixdown needs some audio to mix down...
Are you recording this midi file or are you just wanting to record the audio output of your keyboard.
Does your keyboard have an audio output?
If not where is the sound coming from? a VSTi?
Hi i'm new to cubase le and i am unable to record my midi file to audio.
I have my keyboard attached to alesis io2 with the midi in and out plugs.
is there some kind of setting that i am missing. i have read tutorials and when i click on audio mixdown nothing happens. the saved file does not play.
any ideas, sorry if this is confusing, but i am really confused.
thanks in advance

i am getting sound from my midi cable. my midi files are playing fine through cubase le. its when i try to solo the track out to export to audio mixdown, it creates a new audio track but with nothing in it.
I'm confused. MIDI cables carry no audio information at all. They carry note data, length, trigger point, sustain etc in MIDI code, a kind of computer language. All your computer is sending the keyboard is data, not sound. If the keyboard is providing the sound then you need to connect the audio outs on the keyboard to some kind of desk or amp with speakers. That you can record, thats audio. The MIDI data is not audio so when you audio mix down the computer contains none of the sounds needed and the MIDI cable can't transmit the audio to the PC. You need to feed the audio of the keyboard beack into the soundcard and record the audio to a new track that way. Either that or use a soft synth, that will bounce down to audio as its internal to the computer. Hope that helps.
That make perfect sense, but I am still not getting the desired result. here is My set up
I am running with window XP Pro
My Keyboard is the Korg X5
My external sound card is the alesis i02
I connect the left and right output cable from the keyboard to Alesis left and right output.
I have my midi OUT going to IN in the alesis io2 and IN to OUT.
Please bared with me as I am new to this new world
I am able record MIDI, but I do not know how to convert to audio
Thank You all
I think you're plugging into your Alesis outputs is the problem, it should go to the inputs. Unless thats a typo and you meant inputs, here's a longer answer. It covers all the basics to get it working.
OK, the X5 and XP I know. Heres how you should set it up. Firstly, make sure the MIDI out you want to use is in use in Cubase. OK, take the MIDI cable and plug it into the MIDI in on the X5, plug the other end into the MIDI out on the Alesis. Make sure you're channel in Cubase is set to send the MIDI data on the same channel that the X5 is set to recieve at. (What that is depends on whether you are using combi patches or banks. For combi its best to set your Cubase track with the data to MIDI channel 1 but you may need to edit in the system menu. I fully recomend a manual for that) Press play in Cubase and that should make the X5 make a noise. Try a pair of headphones plugged directly into the X5 to make sure (but remember to turn the volume down, it may be loud). If it makes a sound you're all set to go. Plug the audio out from the X5 to the audio in on the Alesis. Bring up a new audio channel in the arrange screen and set it to record. The X5 will play the MIDI and Cubase will record its audio output.
If things are still silent then it may be several things like;
MIDI Channel in Cubase not set to send to the Alesis MIDI port.
Cubase channel and X5 are set to different channel numbers (hence the X5 just ignores the data as its ready for a different channel number)
Or it could be in the system in the X5 someone has turned on some MIDI filter and its ignoring all notes. I stress thats very, very unlikely but you have to consider everything. And if you want to use the X5 as a controller, just MIDI out on the X5 to MIDI in on the controller. Set 'Local' to off in the edit menu and then the keyboard can control and MIDI instrument bought up in Cubase. Hope that solves it for you.
Since you can here something, what you here is from the audio outputs of the keyboard, not MIDI.
Are you using Cubase LE or Cubase LE4? It's handled slightly different. In Cubase LE4 you need to open an instrument track, (PROJECT > INSERT RACK > MIDI) select a VSTi instrument to play the MIDI, and then you will be able to mix down the resulting audio.
I hate people who take drugs. Customs officers for example.
i have the headphones plugged to the alesis and when i click play on the midi track i can hear audio. however when i switch the device from asio multimedia driver to alesis io2 usb asio to record audio, i get the following message "no asio driver error". any ideas is greatly appreciated.
i had the two inputs mixed up in the alesis io2 and i had to fix my "in" and "out" in cubase le 1.08 so that i could record. i had to set the "in" to "all midi inputs" and the "out" to "usb devise" thank you to everyone for all your help.
