Default midi recording problem on cubase

hey guys,
im really new to this and i wanted to start recording using midi.
i have a yamaha mm6 and a tascam us-144 audio/midi interface. i got 2 midi cables-- one connecting from midi out of the keyboard to the midi in of the tascam and the other cable connecting midi out from the tascam to the yamaha mm6.
i'm currently using cubase le and i started a new midi track. but, i am not totally sure how to set up the track (in/out and channels) such that i could get sound and listen to the midi track. when i press the keyboard, i can see the green volume level bar increasing and decreasing on the midi track (on cubase) but i cannot hear anything even when i press the monitor button on. i can record but there is no sound from the keyboard to hear what i am playing and i also cannot hear what i have recorded.
i was wondering if any of you could help me with this. i would really appreciate it.
i hope someone can get back to me
Thanks in advance.

Since you have a quality synthesizer in the Yamaha mm you probably want to record it's sounds, not just the Midi data. You don't hear anything on the midi track because it is only data and you need to play it through some VSTi instrument (Soft Synth). You have left and right 1/4' outputs on the back of teh Yamaha. That is what you can put through your audio interface to record the audio and hear the sounds your synth is actually producing.

If you wanted to record the midi, to edit it, and then play it back later through the Yamaha, then you would probably want to monitor the Yamaha through its headphones jack while you play.

Finally, the Yamaha has a USB port and if you read the manual, you'll most likely find that you can record to Cubase without using the Tascam Interface. But I can't help you with that.

Good luck, I recommend you check out Brandon's articles and working with MIDI.
