Default Midi hangs

Just set up Cubase SX3 in a new:

Intel Quadcore Q6600
WinXP Pro w/ sp2
4 gig RAM
ATI Radeon Graphics Sapphire HD 3870
2 terabytes of Dedicated RAID 0 drives for media storage.

but naturally I have some problems.

Audio seems to be OK, but when I record a few midi tracks, the system locks up and I have to crtl/alt/delete.

Here's the setup. I have a keyboard controller with only midi in and midi out(no thru).
I have a Roland PMA sound module also with only midi in and out .
I'm trying to connect them through a M-Audio USB Audiophile box which also has only midi in and out. I hooked the controller's midi out into the M-Audio midi in and connected the M-Audio midi out to the midi in on the Roland Sound module. That got me midi sound but the midi eventually locks up and you know the rest!

Can any one help me make the right connections.
Cheers for now.

Seems like a good enough setup.

Number one thing - since the PC is new, do you have all the latest drivers for all the PC kit? BIOS, video, mobo, everything!? I'd start there.

Next, follow the instructions here.
That's similar to a set of instructions I followed and found a vast improvement in my system - but I lost the link so I googled "setup XP for music recording".

Next, let's remove cubase from the picture - does the system hang when you just setup all your midi connections and play for a while? If it does, it aint cb. If it doesn't, put cubase back and again, don't record, just play... now what? Just trying to pin down the source of the problem - geddit?

Hope these bits help you...

Thanks for that Ruzz,
I'll give your suggestions a go.
By the way, because the controller is input to the M-Audio box and that is output to the sound module inputs, I can't really play midi without having Cubase on. I have a feeling that is where the problem is. Anyway, I will play a long piece of midi to see if it jams , or is it only when recording while playing a previously recorded track back.
Get back to you soon.
Cheers
Laz

First, make sure you have the latest version of Cubase SX 3. The newer versions are way more reliable than the version that came on my cd.

I'm assuming you are using your keyboard's sounds so all that your computer is doing is capturing the MIDI data and sending it back out to the audio interface to trigger the notes within your keyboard. What happens if you ditch the MIDI out from your audio interface and instead trigger a synth within Cubase? (Press F11).
