You have to go to VST Instruments on Devices submenu or press F11 to get the box. Click the vst instrument(s) you want to attach to the project. Then you can assign one to the midi track in the inspector window. There are some nuances between defining a track as a midi track or an instrument track that I don't fully understand, but I am having better luck adding an instrument track, playing a midi sequence in that is assigned to a vst instrument. Please let us know if this fixes your problem.
Thanks
Alan

In any troubleshooting procedure it's good to simplify as much as possible. You say you can't even hear an audio track. I would try to solve that problem first. The rest may fall into place.

With Cubase LE, I used to get into situations after adding VST stuff to a project, where as soon as I opened the project, I would get a message something like "Connection with soundcard has been lost". There would be a button that said "Reset all devices". I would click that button, all the VST plugins would dissappear from the project, but suddenly I would have audio again.

Now I have Cubase SE 3. Still if I leave a project open for a while without any activity (long phone call, bathroom break, lunch, or whatever) and come back to it and try to play it, there's no audio. I close it and reopen it and bang, there's the sound.

If you can get one audio track to play, then build up the complexity one plugin at a time, you may be able to find the thing that's hanging it up.

What is your audio interface or are you using the stock soundcard? This is your first Cubase install. Have you ever run recording software of any kind on this rig?

VST instruments are really plug ins. Midi has to drive a sound module. If you have no sound module - you will not hear sounds from midi no matter what you do. Also make sure your connections show in your vst connections. Some times you have to re-add them.

This is why I suggest to get it working with an audio track first just to make sure Cubase signal is getting out through the soundcard. Then fix the midi

I guess you could say this. The distinction between running MIDI through them or running audio through them probably needs to be made though.
