Default Loading on a Vista PC for the first time

Well after three days of heartache and anguish and a multitude of asking silly questions on this website i have finally got Cubase to work on my HP laptop, I thought I should document the root causes of my issues to repay the patience of the people who took the time to answer my stupid questions and also every little bit of info helps! especially for complete green horns like me!

The basic problem turned out to be with vista Search utility searchindexer, it seemed to hicup on the install of addictive drums and throw the processor into a perpetual indexing mode. Cubase crashed due to lack of processer ! I followed the advice on thread searchindexer.exe utilizing near 100% CPU usage; suggestions from this forum tried to no avail - MSDN Forums

which helped me identify the files the indexer was tripping up on. The issue was also related to the power options I had set on the laptop. Searchindexer seems to be to inefficient to cope on power save option. You get an irritating message on Indexing Options. After selecting high power and removing certain file types from the indexer i rebuilt the search index in minutes and voila problem solved!

this is very unscientific and some readers may think this rubbish - if so i either tripped upon the solution by accident and my explanation is rubbish or I have not solved the problem. Touch wood the latter does not seem to be true! So if somebody else is struggling with Vista check Indexing Options!

all i can say is good luck with vista. your heartache and anguish will eventually become grey hairs and suicidal thoughts.

It took me a long time to get it working on vista, the main things i found were trying to get the licencing dongle to work (SX2) it took a lot of uninstalling, reinstalling and mucking about to eventually start downloading all the updates i could find, eventually it went on!

But yes i think it caused my first grey hair!!

since I responde to you I have just noticed in the manual that it advices not to load vista from the dvd as the licenses dongle driver may not be uptodate. So i decided to download the latest driver for the key. So far no difference as still crashing. Interested to know if yo found any other issues?

That to be honest was my only issue with cubase and vista, since i updated the licence drivers, and downloaded all the updates from steinberg for sx2, i havent had any major problems, it all seems very stable, i sometime have an issue where i start up a porject and click play and nothing happens, a quick restart of cubase seems to sort this out quite quickly though. If you have any specific problems i would be more than happy to try and recreate them on my machine for you, are you using vista and sx2?

Anyone have the issue of the install just failing? Mine seems to hang when the install tool tries to setup the licensing software. I would love to install the upgrade but if I can't get the original install to work I am stuck.

EDIT: Nevermind I Googled the exact error that I was getting and found a few articles with solutions. I had to change a performance setting in Vista, uninstall Cubase, install latest version of the licensing software and then re-install Cubase. A pain but it is working.
