Default Live playback of vst instruments

In cubase LE, I've set up an instrument track and can record midi data played on the keyboard. On playback, I can hear the audio output of the instrument track. However, I can't hear the audio WHILE I'm playing. I presume I'm supposed to be able to.

So I know the midi is being transferred ok because 1. my transport shows midi activity and 2. this midi actually gets recorded. And I know that the audio output of the instrument is ok because I can hear it on playback. But between that something is going wrong.

I've clicked the 'monitor' on the track but no change. Am I doing something wrong?

Do you have the monitor button selected on your midi track ?

To be honest, if you've got the monitor switched on and you still can't hear it, I'm not sure what the problem might be...

What kind of instrument is it? Where is the output being routed? It presumably goes to the stereo bus, since you're getting something on playback....

Maybe you just don't have enough RAM to have the notes play back at the same time they're being played (I have had this problem with EZDrummer - I hit a drum, but don't hear anything, or sometimes the note is delayed)

I've tried it with a vst synth, a soundfont player, and using a gm midi track. In the case of the midi track, it's routed to the ms wavetable synth (which would normally go to the default audio device). The intrument tracks are routed to the intrument itself, and I don't think you specify an output from there, do you?

But yeah, I AM getting sound on playback, so perhaps it isn't the routing.

I've got 2 gig of ram, and it usually handles OK. I've had some fairly large audio only projects on the go and it's fine.

Still stuck. Any ideas?

I'll be honest with you - I'm stumped. No surprise I guess since I don't have a midi keyboard, so the only time I ever enter midi data is in a drum track that I construct with the mouse.
I mean, 2GB is loads of RAM, so that kills that idea...
Out of interest, you say you can see some midi activity in the transport, but can you see anything happening on the output channel? Is there any chance there's something weird going on in the monitoring? I'm just flying by the seat of my pants here...

No, there's nothing happening on the output channel while I'm playing.
When I playback the recorded data, an instrument track will show on the output meters, but a midi track output through the wavetable synth doesn't, but I think that's normal, isn't it?

all sorted!
I did a reinstall and all is fine now. I think there was a problem when installing the update patch. Once I uninstalled and removed all files (including the settings and templates), reinstalled and all's good. Thanks for your time.
