Default Edit Midi-files?

I used to have cakewalk 9. I could load a multitrack midifile and edit to my hearts content! Take out the horns, change the tuba to a bass guitar, piano to a synth. Then easily transpose the whole mess to my
singing key, so I could later add audio tracks.
I been trying to load and playback midifiles to cubase. I can get one loaded, but everythings on one track. Goesn't look like anything is editable (no menues, no tools) And I can't get it to play back even tho there's a click track sounding thru the moniters from the
play mode. Whatzup??

One more question... is there any way to insert drum loops?

I don't use MIDI very often but I remember importing a file once and VIOLA! I had a dozen track and they all played fine. So there is a way to do it. Maybe this will bump your topic up a bit.

As far as drum loops, sure. Open an audio track and import the file. If Cubase is in Musical mode it will match the tempo. Acidized loops should always match tempo, I believe.

There are two different types of MIDI file... traditionally called Type 0 and Type 1. Don't remember which is which, but one will load as a flat file on a single track, the other will be expanded. If yours loads as a single track, select it, and choose MIDI > Dissolve Part. This will create individual tracks.

Now here's the thing. To make these work, you'll need to probably need to either assign them to a General MIDI device, or set up each track so that it has a MIDI instrument assigned, then load the appropriate VSTi's for those instruments.

Thanks for the input everyone!
Question... To get a midi track to play on Cakewalk you just press play.
On Cubase, do I need to assign it to play? Like I said, I can hear a click track, but no other sounds!

I can't say it any better than Richiebee said it, so I'll quote him

"Now here's the thing. To make these work, you'll need to probably need to either assign them to a General MIDI device, or set up each track so that it has a MIDI instrument assigned, then load the appropriate VSTi's for those instruments"
So this - then press play.
When I load a multitrack midi file I usually don't have to map - the tracks seem to find my Halion One Synth and assign themselves to the appropriate voice, ie drums, piano, bass etc..
