Default Cubase4 monitoring problem

Just installed C4. Using an external mixer and direct monitoring.
My problem is that I'm not getting an input channel reading unless I activate the monitor button. I've checked the manual but can't see an answer to it.
The track records & plays back ok but obviously I need to check the level before recording without switching on the internal monitoring.
A while ago I went on a course and we were using SX1, and I had no trouble with that.
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks

I don't know of any way to get a channel reading w/o the record enable monitoring on, but I monitor inside Cubase. There is a setting to control the monitor behavior that may also affect meters but I don't have where it is in front of me. If you have the big boy version of C4, I'm sure there is a way.

I've checked all the preferences that I can find. Yes I have full version.
When I was using SX1 I just enabled the track and the reading came straight up. Never enabled the monitor indicator.
I've enabled direct monitoring in the device setup but I'm wondering, if I enable the track monitor am I then monitoring from Cubase or does it just mean the direct monitoring is on?

I think if you enable the track monitor you are monitoring through cubase. I hate to say it, but it's probably time to hit the operations manual. Not fun. Let us know, please.
