Hi guys Cheers for any help incurred, this is probably a really simple problem but is hard to phrase, so finding it on the net and the manual is a no go. Im running an Edirol UA25 through Cubase SX3 to record some of my guitar based songs. Their is a right and left jack port on the soundcard, one with a Hi-z which i usually record through. However when recording in cubase it only appears on the left hand track and obviously the right hand track when you record through the other jack port. If you record in Adobe Audition/CoolEdit, you can select the left and copy it onto the right, so in affect making it a stereo recording. However i cannot seem to make this happen in Cubase. Stupid and basic i know but really irritating,as i said before, any help would be great appreciated. Cheers Matt |

Hi all, I posted this on another thread until i found this much more obvious place to find my answer. Basically, im using an Edirol UA25 external sound card to record my guitar based songs on Cubase SX3. The soundcard has a left and right jack inpurt, with the right having a HI-z button to assist with guitar recording. *The Problem* When i record the guitar by plugging it straight into the jack, in cubase it only appears in the right channel, therefore i only get sound out of the right speaker. On Adobe Audition this problem can be easily sorted by opening the wave editor and simply copying the wave on the right and pasting it on the left. The problem works both ways ie left to right, right to left etc. Is there any way to record so that it is on both channels or an easy way to copy and paste like adobe audtion. Let me know if i havnt explained this well enough. Huge massive appreciation if anyone can help me out, this has bugged me for like 2 years. Cheers Matt |

I use cubase 4. If you want a stereo track you need to feed both inputs. I think what you are trying to do is record a mono track. Create a new mono track and select the correct input in the mixer window above the track. I hope I answered the right question here.

I answered this under your previous post but I am curious what have you done for the last 2 years with the problem.

the last 2 years has just involved tracks with the bass coming out of the left and the guitar coming out the right. Or having to record in adobe audtion and then bounce down into wav to use in cubase. I am effectively only recording in mono, but i just want the same sound to come out of both speakers. At the moment its like this, i record my peice, now when i double click on the wave in cubase, only one side has any noise on it, i just want to copy the noise from say the right to the left,so its both the same. It just seems strange that a programme as similar as Audition its only two clicks to do this and i cant figure it out. I am probably making a mountain out of a mole hill. Are you suggesting that i just use a mono track and hit the mono button on the soundcard? The guitar is being recorded straight into the soundcard with no microphones,is this reffered to as 'Dry Signal'? |

I am suggesting you use a mono track and when you plug into the left side of the sound card select that as the input for the mono channel in cubase. I think the mono button on your sound card will be for listening not recording but I am not sure.

Exactly... if you have a mono source, use a mono track. If you want it equally out of both speakers, pan it centre. The mono switch on your interface is probably for direct monitoring, and you might want to have that mono switch on. Rich |

To recap, when you add a new track in cubase you get the option to make it stereo or mono. Use mono for mono signals like, guitar, vocals, etc. Use stereo for stereo sources like input from a mixer, some keyboards and drum machines. Then pan them left , right or center as you wish. The OUTPUT of Cubase is stereo (unless you go out of your way to create a mono output) regardless of the inputs. Now you CAN easily copy a track in Cubase. Open a new track and copy and paste the wav file to the new track. But there is no advantage to this unless you plan on treating each track differently, like adding different effects to each.

cheers for the help guys, pretty much fully sorted my problem. From reading aroud these boards it however looks like i know nothing and just have one small question (you wouldnt think i had a degree in music tech). We didnt do a lot of recording at uni so am still fairly unwise about it all. I have amassed that i need to have a limiter and a compressor. I downloaded the Sonnox Oxford series and have recently aquired a cracked version of amplitube 2, i will buy these programmes if their good enough but cant justify the outlay on something i dont know. When im recording now, do i put the limiter as an insert on before i record or after? Is it a process? Also when i record and apply amplitube to the track it tends to crack and pop a lot, any common reason for this? Cheers |
