I'm setting up a modest home studio and plan to get Cubase Studio. I can pick up Version 4 from third-parties or Version 5 from Steinberg for the same price. I have a Dell XPS 410 with a Core 2 duo running at 2.4GHz, so I meet the specs for running both versions. Since I have no experience in Cubase, which would be the smarter version for me -- 4 or 5? Thanks for your help. |

They are not the same price, they are both still for sale. 4 is $100 more. Why? No idea. Some have speculated that 4 is mature and stable while 5 is new and will probably have bugs and updates. I'm thinking of going from 3 to 5.

I have Studio 5. After looking at all the demos for the different versions of Cubase and different brands it seem they all are just putting new lipstick on the same pig, although I think I kind of liked Protools. It seemed a little more user friendly for me.

I have cubase 5. When I went to register the cubase 4 I had purchased, I noticed that the 5 was available on the Steinburg site, so I contacted my area distributor, I mentioned that had I had known at the time of purchase, I would have prefered the latest version. They told me that I qualified for a grace period Cubase 5. Came in its own box minus the the key. It looks and smells the same as cubase 4 which I still have, with 2 or 3 modifications added. It is more than enough get it --- $ 500

How are you liking Cubase 5? Brandon |

It is still complicated but I suppose it is the learning curve. As far a sound quality it does fine. I wish these DAWs were built for the user and not the computer geek. One man's logic is another man's confusion. I may have mentioned I am from the old Tascam 1/2" days so maybe that is part of the problem. I may have mentioned I kind of liked Protools. I think if I had to do it over I might have gone that route.

I don't have enough experience in recording to be able to properly estimate one daw from another, what I do know is the sound I'm getting from the Cubase 5 is far superior to anything I've used before (Tascam B25 reelxreel). redoing a track is totaly faster. You don't hear much from me because I'm still in the learning curve about it's potential, and right now I'm picking out the differences between the MR816 csx mixer - which is a computer in itself and Cubase5. I definitaly made good choices in the purchases of equipment I've gotten, All with the help of Recording Review. I'm excited about recording and I'll be thrilled the day I can send in a song for bashing.

I have Cubase 4 Studio and read the new feature list in 5 and didn't see anything in it that I use that would make me upgrade. Maybe some more plug ins - but 4 has everything I need - although I am pretty simple recording wise. Record track, add effect, eq and mix.
