Default Cubase Recording Onto New Track

I'm using Cubase LE and every time I go to record a new track while listening to a playback of a previous one it records a very faint overdub of the previous track on the current track I am recording.
So it's like having two of the same track just one being a lot less louder.
This only happens though when I have headphones plugged into the headphone jack on my computer.
the second I unplug the headphones it stops and the recording track just flat lines, but will pick up an instrument I am recording.
I could record using my laptop speakers but what happens when I use a microphone to record an acoustic guitar track, the microphone is going to pick up my laptop playing back tracks I have already recorded.
So basically I need to find out how to plug in headphones without this issue happening.
please help me.
PLEASE!!!

What audio interface are you using?

What are you using to receive audio for recording - IOW, is it a microphone? Or is it something else, like an instrument plugged "straight in"?

Which is why I asked the mic question - is your mic picking up sound leaking from your headphones?

Silly, I know. But it happens.

Assuming it's not the mic then... I'm with Brandon - what interface are you using? Is it setup correctly? Is it setup correctly in cubase? Are all the inputs "discrete"?

I'm betting it's the cans leaking.

It is an instrument plugged straight in.

no mic is being used it is an instrument plugged directly into the mixer by a 1/4 inch cable.

I'm using a Xenyx Behringer 802 mixer as an audio interface.
I'm not sure if it's setup correctly and I'm not sure if all the inputs are discrete. I am new to cubase.

Ahh. I get it.

a) If the headphone being plugged in on your stock soundcard is causing issues with recording, it's clear that you aren't really using a low latency audio interface designed for home recording. You are using your stock soundcard. It appears that it isn't full-duplex.

b) The Behringer mixer you linked to doesn't appear to have audio interface functionality. It's just an analog mixer, right? It's possible I missed the part about being USB or Firewire.

The issue could be solved with a real audio interface. Since you already have the mixer, something simple like the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 (found here) could do it.

My producer uses the same equipment and doesn't have this problem though.

I know of zero "producers" who use the stock soundcard on a PC, but you never know I guess.

With that said, since you are using the standalone soundcard on the PC, it's very possible that your producer has a different model than you.
